Maria Sharapova, a three-time Grand Slam singles winner, has made a career of thriving in the big moments. Mental toughness has been her calling card.

We take you now to the fourth game of Monday's fourth-round match with No. 1 seed Caroline Wozniacki. The willowy Russian was serving to level the match that had yet to find a rhythm, and she had a game point on her racket. And then, incredibly:

Double fault.

Double fault.

Double fault.

Always a great day when a Pole defeats a Russian.

Sharapova has been dissapointing in recent years. Her win over Ana Inavovic in 2009 at the Australian open was great, but since then she hasn’t one a championship since. I think Wozniacki is exactly in the same place Sharapova was in 2004. I think Wozniacki is now the rising star. Lots of others have come and gone since Sharapova became famous and I think Wozniacki is the first one to challeneg the likes of SHarapova, Ivanovic, and Jankovic and others. But the Williams sisters still hang around and win.

Probably a copyright issue then. It did make it a little harder to reply to the thread with no comment #1 ;-)

Don't watch tennis too often, but that was a strange match at times.

Sharapova's triple double fault. I thought that was the start of a collapse, although she didn't exactly collapse, she just plain got whupped by a hungrier, younger player.

Then there was Wozniacki's bewildered "what the heck was that?" whiffs, when S's serves seemed to be bouncing much higher than normal. My conspiratorial mind was wondering if S. had worked some doctored tennis balls into her pocket. Shame on me.

Everything you said.

I played tennis for years, Sharapova was just smashing topspin serves at a speed that Wozniacki couldn’t handle. Woz did herself no favors doing the “must be a hole in my racquet” pantomimes.

Seems Wozniacki needs some male tennis partners with professional power serves included. Otherwise the Williams sisters are going to be putting aces past her at every meeting.

I believe the wind was still an issue, something you well know from your years of playing tennis. When the ball is not where it ‘should’ be, you get those kind of mishits.

Have you ever seen the best hitters in baseball look foolish when swinging at a knuckle ball? Same kind of thing.

You do realize Woz won the match right? Her pantomine clearly had no impact on anything as she won in straight sets.
