It takes forever to get the smell of cigarettes out of books and clothes. Yuck. Hence the recent "tarpping of the oval office) and recent remodel? just sayin.....maybe the remodel was done becuase the smoke didn't come out with the first cleaning attempt....

A non-smoker would know pretty quick, no matter how much cleaning they do. You can tell. My parents were chain smokers and I always could.
