The badly decomposed body of a woman found in a chimney flue has been identified as a local doctor, authorities said Monday.
Dr. Jacquelyn Kotarac had been missing since last week, a day after she went to the house of a man whom she had been dating, Bakersfield police Sgt. Mary DeGeare said. Kotarac went to the mans house in the 4300 block of La Mirada Drive Wednesday evening and was reported missing by her office staff Thursday morning, DeGeare said.
DeGeare said she wasnt sure what the status of the relationship was whether they had been broken up or not when Kotarac went to the house. The man, however, didnt want to see her and left the home unnoticed to avoid a confrontation as she tried to force her way inside. DeGeare did not release the mans name, but the resident of that house is listed as William Moodie and neighbors confirmed that was the name of the man living there.
On Saturday, a woman at the house noticed a bad odor, DeGeare said. The woman, who was checking on the fish tank, investigated and saw fluids in the fireplace. She got a flashlight and looked up the flue and realized there was a body stuck there, DeGeare said.
Bakersfield firefighters spent five hours dismantling the chimney and flue from the outside of the home from Saturday to early Sunday to get to the body, DeGeare said. Detectives initially investigated the death as suspicious, but police said Monday that all the evidence indicates Kotarac voluntarily went to the roof, removed the chimney cap and slid down the flue feet first.

LOL!
Okay, you earned your name with that post. : )
Do not inflate until after delivery?
This story has been posted a couple other times in the last few hours, with different bits of info. In one, a neighbor said they thought they heard quiet cries for help, but didn't know where they were coming from. As for how fast she might have decomposed... apparently Bakersfield in August features 100 degree temps, and in a chimney it could get very, very warm. Speeds things up.
Don't know....She was in there approximately 3 days....Maybe she was too embarrassed to yell out....
"Hey, I'm stuck in this GD chimney, someone get me out!"
OR....the good doctor was imagining news helicopters, 20 news teams, all surrounding the home, waiting for emergency crews to tear apart the fireplace to save the doctor, in front of the whole world....Maybe she just kept her mouth shut and died quietly.
Another thread said she became wedge in until her chest was compressed and she couldn’t breathe. Terrible way to die. I can’t even imagine doing something like that.
Stupid is as stupid does. Must be a Democrat.
I didn't read it that way.
We never expected she was in the chimney, said Victor Munoz, who lives next door to the house where the body was removed.Munoz said a purse and other belongings had been found in his neighbors back yard earlier in the week.
I think the neighbor was saying the belongings were found in William Moodie's yard.
While I’ve never contemplated suicide, and certainly know that those who do, aren’t in a right frame of mind, I’ve just couldn’t ever see this as my chosen method.
If I ever decided to murder somebody, I probably wouldn’t put her in my own chimney either.
Another patient, John M. Ulman II, described Kotarac as a true professional. He said her death struck him as a close, personal loss.
Im just totally deflated because she was such a sweet person and she cared about her patients, Ulman said.
Things that do not make sense, and questions that provokes:
I have never seen a chimney that was big enough to fit a person into. I am sure there are fireplaces big enough to warrant a giant ‘human-sized flue, and they are usually on very old houses.
If anything, the bottom of the flue is where it gets bigger, not smaller.
How did she get the ‘cap’ off ?
How did she get on the roof? Was there a ladder leaning against the house?
How long have the ‘maid’ and the new ex ‘boyfriend’ been dating?
Maybe she just lost her house key, and thought that since Santa Claus could fit through, she could too.
Makes perfect sense...Almost all sound would have been directed straight upwards. Any sound she made would have been going straight up, above the roof...
If she went into shock, that would be tough to do.
If she couldn’t breathe she couldn’t yell for help either. Another thread said her chest was compressed and she couldn’t breathe.
I guess that could have killed her pretty quickly too. I was just thinking she was trapped for a few days and didn't add temperatures into my equation. Garbage in, garbage out.
Don’t know. I’ve not seen the autopsy report.
I hope she died quick. She doesn’t sound like the most stable of individuals, but I don’t wish this kind of death on anyone ... well, actually, I have a whole list of people I’d wish it on, but lovesick fools doesn’t make that list. LOL!
That’s funny!
I'm surprised this isn't a prescribed form of punishment under sharia. I guess chimneys aren't wildly popular over there.
Actually the weather here has been nice, not that hot I knew this lady kinda sorta thru a gal that used to work for her. The Dr. Liked to drink and her life was a mess. The local reports say she was asphyxiated which means her chest was compressed when she went down. A sad story.
