Not sure about their posting rules so I'll leave this as-is.
You should check out “A Matter of Life and Death” and give it a few listens to.
“These colours don’t run”
“The Longest Day”
“For the greater good of god”
“The Legacy” etc. etc.
My personal favorite of the “newer” Maiden Albums,
It has some great epics in it..
Saw them in Houston this summer, the only downside to the show was that they took out Paschendale from the previous night, and replaced it with Dance of Death...
Awesome. A very underrated guitarist and studio legend. Most people would be surprised to hear how many of their favorite songs had Rick Derringer playing the guitar parts.
Good one... I really meant to say I prefer the way Di’Anno sings Phantom of the Opera, rather than Dickinson, but Dickinson owned the Powerslave Album, my favorite is Rime of the Ancient Mariner. I wrote a paper in my college art class on Samuel Taylor Coolidge and this classic tale and got an “A” on it.
I am reminiscent of an era where rock was truly art and integrated even earlier forms of art and folklore.
The had the lyrics, and the harmony guitar leads. That is truly rock at it’s best!~
I grew up listening to heavy metal and became a Christian.
Many metal musicians and rockers have become Christian. I think there are some personality traits in rockers that God likes.
Being a guitarist myself, I like to listen to some classic Maiden once in a while. I like the harmony leads in Maiden’s music, but nothing is as fulfilling to me personally like singing an old hymn in a church pue at the top of my lungs in baritone.
I have traded my electric guitar for an “Old Rugged Cross”...
And yes I believe Jesus loves bikers too!!
I’ll grant you that their three top ranked Pearl Jam songs are all from the latest album, but they have 3 ancient Red Hot Chili Pepper songs and a Green Day cut from Dookie in similar rotation:
http://www.thebuzz.com/iplaylist/playlist.html?net=21
Even Blind Melon make the cut and likewise they’ve been dead for 15 years.
From their playlist just put the following CDs in a carousel and press shuffle:
Bush
Pearl Jam
Green Day
Nirvana
Stone Temple Pilots
Toadies
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Foo Fighters
Metallica
Nickelback
Nine Inch Nails
Weezer
Creed
Incubus
Third Eye Blind
Soundgarden
Jane’s Addiction
Offspring
311
Linkin Park
Goo Goo Dolls
Seether
Staind
And at the time I’m posting this, the Last 10 played are:
1. Shinedown - Sound Of Madness
2. Green Day - She
3. Papa Roach - Last Resort
4. Cage The Elephant - Back Against The Wall
5. Metallica - Fuel
6. Silversun Pickups - Lazy Eye
7. Seether / Amy Lee - Broken
8. Rise Against - Savior
9. Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun
10. No Doubt - Just A Girl
They are, but those are still bands putting out new music. How do you draw a line on what part of a current bands music you can play? Are program directors really supposed to say, “under no circumstances are you to go back past Californication”? Seems pretty arbitrary to me. It isn’t like their sound has changed tremendously, it is fair to say that if people want to hear Dani California, they probably want to hear Give It Away as well.
I would also question how many stations brand themselves as “modern rock” as opposed to just “rock” which would give more leeway on this anyway.
Did you follow the link back to the list of OLD songs being played on what they purport to be a “modern rock” station?
No White Stripes in the top 140 (for example).
They are myopic in the extreme and then wonder why radio doesn’t resonate with the public like it used to.
Certainly Iron Maiden isn’t “too hard rock” for the listeners’ ears so there is another factor at play.
The bands I listed were in heavy rotation and yet only represent a mere fraction of the bands released in the past 20 years even that qualify as “radio played rock acts”.
Bruce Dickinson is an accomplished pilot, world-class fencer (offered a spot on the British Olympic team, turned it down due to touring), pretty good solo career, TV host on the Discovery Channel sometimes, and a published author.
Steve Harris was offered a position on the West Ham football team as well.
Adrian Smith has had articles written about him in fishing magazines.
Looking at my local station they clearly are not obeying any modern rock criteria as they have played Jimi Hendrix, ZZ Top and Led Zeppelin in the last 10 songs.
We have one of those, that is unlikely to play anything after around 1987.

Run by the same corporate entity that runs the other station I posted.
1. Foghat - Slow Ride
2. Mountain - Mississippi Queen
3. Stevie Ray Vaughan / Double Trouble - The Sky Is Crying
4. Boston - More Than A Feeling
5. Pink Floyd - Have A Cigar
6. Led Zeppelin - Fool In The Rain
7. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Down On The Corner
8. Fleetwood Mac - The Chain
9. Golden Earring - Twilight Zone
10. Steely Dan - Do It Again
Then we also have the more “office friendly” mix of 70s/80s with some new wave and 90s:
http://1069thepoint.com/lsp/index.html
Authority Song - John Mellencamp
I’m on Fire - Bruce Springsteen
Ironic - Alanis Morissette
Gimme All Your Lovin’ - ZZ Top
Take It on the Run - REO Speedwagon
Rio - Duran Duran
Panama - Van Halen
If You Could Only See - Tonic
Obsession - Animotion
Love Bites - Def Leppard
Longest Time - Billy Joel
Right Here, Right Now - Jesus Jones
Tom Sawyer - Rush
Need You Tonight - INXS
Love Is a Battlefield - Pat Benatar
It Must Have Been Love - Roxette
Love Shack - The B-52’s
I saw your post after that one.
I’m just blaming Clear Channel for any and all evils. The general policy seems to be plenty of familiar stuff and then lots of similar sounding bands in between. Don’t get anyone too excited by something new.
I’m not sure why Iron Maiden isn’t played. Speaking only for myself, I can say that I have never thought “what I need to hear right now is Iron Maiden.” But then, I never thought I needed to hear REO Speedwagon either and the classic rock station loves them.
Then there is the “new music” pop/rap/dance station, music for a mall food court, here is where we will find Nickelback and Kings of Leon on the dial:

There is Alvin Community College and KPFT Pacifica. Rice radio KTRU just got sold off unbeknownst to the students (sold to UofH so NPR can broadcast 24-7 on the high power station and their classical music programming can move to a half-strength second station).
theirs a metal ping list? - if so put me on...
Iron Maiden Wasted Years

They seem like bright guys who are very successful in other areas. Fencing is cool. The UK Telegraph had a funny story about Bruce on the airliner where a fan saw him. The fan almost fell over.
I remember reading the Nicko article about how he wanted to become a better golfer. If I remember correctly, he became a scratch golfer which is very very good.
The industry block on Iron Maiden goes far deeper than just Clear Channel. It stretches back to the early 1980s.
Can’t be the pseudo-Satanic imagery in a couple album covers. These same stations cheerfully played Marilyn Manson and even Butthole Surfers’ “The Lord Is A Monkey”.
Someone didn’t play ball with someone along the way. That’s how the industry works.
Prince hasn’t gotten respect from the industry in a long time either. He last garnered a hit by circumventing the normal channels of distribution and promotion by giving his album out free (on Sony) to every concert goer.
