THE YEAR WAS 2081, and everybody was finally equal. They weren't only equal before God and the law. They were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else. All this equality was due to the 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments to the Constitution, and to the unceasing vigilance of agents of the United States Handicapper General.

From Harrison Bergeron, by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. I think it bears review for those of you who have not read it. Ayn Rand also had a thing or two to say about limiting the rest of society to make things "fair" for the tiny minority of handicapped persons. Crippling the rest of us so we have no "unfair advantages" is simply wrong.

"There is big money in Barnes and Nobles' college textbook distribution monopoly. "

I remember vividly how much my textbooks cost nearly 25 years ago. I can only imagine how much they cost now. It was big business back then and the campus police actually got involved in an investigation of students who formed a co-op to sell their textbooks directly to other students. They made plenty of money and the buyers got textbooks for less. Win-win. The administration actually said that it was unfair to the other students and threatened to expel them. The campus bookstore was such a racket.

I also remember having to scrimp and save, working whatever hours I could, just to get by while in college. Nor was I the only one doing so. It seemed like the dorms were always full, regardless of when I registered (full of minority students). Meanwhile, the minority students were getting all their meals free, their housing free, their books free, preferential treatment in every way.

How was that "fair?"

I wonder how printed books managed to escape for so long.

Are not Braille editions of textbooks required to be available under the ADA?

Close but not quite on the mark. The DOJ, and this Chicom loving little schm-k Perez, who has divided loyalties (between Castro and Chavez) wouldn’t have gotten involved except a Taiwan manufacturer picked up ownership of E-Ink. See: http://www.xconomy.com/boston/2009/06/01/taiwanese-display-maker-buys-cambridges-e-ink-for-215-million/
