The NRA, Poop Creek and A Missing Paddle
Liberty Reborn ^ | August 20, 2010 | J.J. Jackson

The National Rifle Association is not getting a lot of rave reviews from its members lately. In fact, by the looks of things the NRA is willfully taking a long trip up poop creek and doing so without a paddle in hand. What is the whole kerfuffle that has led to this ill advised journey? Well it revolves around Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Harry Reid is in a not so surprising fight for his political future in Nevada. The incumbent Senator is in a statistical dead heat with challenger Sharron Angle. It is a fight that Mr. Reid does not believe he should be in and that he cannot understand. He thinks the people should adore him. If they are foolish enough not to blindly love him then at least he thinks they should show him some respect as a long term representative of theirs in Washington and simply reelect him. Whether or not Mr. Reid deserves such respect after years of trashing individual liberties and our Constitution is of secondary importance. For you see, Harry Reid is a member of the ruling class and he is entitled.

Like most liberals, Harry Reid is a walking gaffe machine. And when he speaks his lack of substance becomes regularly apparent. So it would be a surprise for most to learn that the NRA is actually considering endorsing this man in the 2010 midterm elections. Yes, you heard right, the NRA is actually considering endorsing a man who has been a leader in our charge off the cliff and into the abyss.

The NRA’s excuse? They claim Harry Reid has been a champion of gun rights. On top of that they opine that if Harry Reid is defeated and the Democrats retain control of the Senate someone unkind to gun rights might ....

That's all well and good, m'FRiend, but if that fuckhead Reid in hard reality supports the 2nd with anything but his lips during a tough campaign, I'm both the Pope and the 2nd coming of Colonel Colt.

Reid is filth. For you (or anyone) to accept his blather about being a "gun rights supporter" (his phrase, not mine) marks you as either terminally naive or actually anti-2nd.

There is NO third possibility.

“Just in case I can ever afford a gun, is there an alternatative to the NRA?”

The NSSF, National Shooting Sports Foundation. good group and quite politicaly active as well, in my opinion.

Me too. No renewal to NRA until I hear they have not endorsed Reid.

“Has anyone sent an email to the NRA saying membership renewal is contingent on no reid endorsement?”

No emails, but every mailing I get, either asking for donations or renewal of membership, I am sending back in their postage-paid envelopes with the notation: “NO CONTRIBUTION (OR RENEWAL) UNTIL YOU RENOUNCE HARRY REID!”

I suggest everyone here do the same.

The NRA also cut a deal with the National Socialist Democrat Workers Party on campaign finance. They are becoming like AARP, willing to sell out to the highest bidder.

“They have a more sophisticated strategy to protect the 2nd Admendment.”

HORSEPUCKEY! The old joke on Capitol Hill is that the Dems want to shred the Constitution all at once and the Repubs just want to do it a page at a time. The NRA would be the ones who offered to provide the shredder, or at least make sure the plug was in the socket so it would run OK.

The NRA has morphed into the same thing that infests Washington DC. Long term, CYA, follow the money, do anything to get re-elected and get those donations (pay offs). When the NRA political elite want to pull their collective head out of their colon and realize that there is no such thing as a “single issue organization” as far as upholding the Constitution is concerned, I may think better of them. But they have become political kissasses and money chasers, not a Constitutional rights organization.

And it doesn’t have anything at all to do with political party. They can treat all politicians the same way, no matter what letter is after their name if they predicate their support and function on preserving the Constitution. And that means all of the Constitution, not just one isolated article they happen to back. The NRA should support ANYONE who upholds their oath and the Constitution, no matter what party they belong to. That is the true meaning of “non-partisan”. If all the gun-grabbers were in the GOP, then I’d expect the NRA to go after them.

As far as I can see, there’s no difference in the long term ruling elite in the NRA than in Washington, DC. Both need to be changed often because power and money corrupts and soon the only objective is to retain position because of the power and money. Wayne LaP should be the subject of term limits, just as any politician should be. After all, from where I stand, he’s just become another politician.

They have a more sophisticated strategy to protect the 2nd Admendment.

No, they don't.

They are not "sophisticated" enough to realize that the Supreme Court is the trump card in any single issue.

If they endorse a single Senator who voted to put Kagan on the Court, they will never get another dollar from me.

I once was a member of NRA, when men like Charlton Heston still were involved in its operations. But after some of the recent actions and statements out of them: Words cannot express how little I give a crap about the NRA!

Yes, supporting and defending the man who supports and pushes through anti-gun justices to the Supreme Court is a winning strategy for the NRA! Whoops, no it’s not.

Thank God we no longer need the NRA to protect the 2nd Amendment.

There is a plethora of gun rights groups nowadays that are very effective regionally and nationally. The NRA did great work during the long twilight struggle but we no longer need a one-stop-shop to defend gun rights. It is nowadays much more a state and local issue ever since the concealed carry permit became the main event.

I am not sure if they are un-needed, yet at the federal level, when you include the commas, putting them in the correct context a national and natural fight for the 2nd amendment really did not have to happen; nonetheless they were needed to hold off the political class from outright destroying America.

I think the NRA should be the spearhead and assist the state groups, mobilizing mass media campaigns instead of sucking up to this human debris of a ruling class, which believe they are exempt. If the NRA really wanted to do a good job they should also focus on education and advocating within the states. Possibly pulling an ACORN and Planned Abortion Inc tactic and become the Social Bridge for Social Justice regarding a Constitutional Right; which is stated clearly in English. This would be very effective if tried; which is one reason the political class does not want large orgs or business they cannot control, to be able to politically advertise (McCain Feingold) and using multiple censorship mechanisms to prevent a knowledgeable citizenry.

My short list for removal is Pelosi, Reid, McCain, Snow, Stupak, Alexander, Lugar, Kyl, Gregg, Voinovich and any other RINOs which find it advantageous to sell out America, while lining their pockets.

I had an argument with a NRA caller about a month ago.
Naturally, they wanted money. I told the guy that as long as they endorsed Reid, and Wayne LaPierre was the President, I would never give them a dime, again.
The Bonehead didn’t even know what I was talking about.

“1.2.3....The NRA is a single isue entity, blah, blah. blah.... You know its coming......”

I love the stupid ingrates who bash the NRA for maintaining a focus on gun-rights rather than allow themselves to be distracted by other issues. There are thousands of advocates or opponents for other issues, only a few dedicated to gun issues. If it wasn’t for the NRA the only guns we could own would probably be single shot 22s. Even after the big SC win and all the other wins the NRA was instrumental in bringing about, there are still morons who want to abandon the organization. I have nothing against the other gun organizations, but collectively they haven’t delivered anything. The politicos aren’t afraid of the GOA or NSSA, but they soil their pants when the NRA opposes them.

The Reid issue is only the latest NRA “image problem.” It wasn’t too long ago they pushed through the NICS Improvement Act which stands to take away legal firarms ownership from veterans with PTSD, the infirmed elderly and other groups of citizens who otherwise wouldn’t have been at risk for being charged with a felony before this act passed.

The NRA actively supports “moderate” gun control and have for quite some time.

The NRA is part of the ruling class. They exist to collect money to give the illusion of protecting the 2nd amendment.

I’m sorry there are better organizations to belong to who will fight harder. They continue to compromise my rights a little at a time and waste money on RINO’s.

NO Soup for the NRA.

breaking-just got the following email:

2010 Nevada U.S. Senate Race
In the coming days and weeks, the NRA Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) will be announcing endorsements and candidate ratings in hundreds of federal races, as well as thousands of state legislative races. Unless these announcements are required by the timing of primary or special elections, the NRA-PVF generally does not issue endorsements while important legislative business is pending. The NRA-PVF also operates under a long-standing policy that gives preference to incumbent candidates who have voted with the NRA on key issues, which is explained in more detail here.
The U.S. Senate recently considered a number of issues important to NRA members, including the confirmation of Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court. Out of respect for the confirmation process, the NRA did not announce its position on Ms. Kagan’s confirmation until the conclusion of her testimony before the Senate Judiciary committee. Her evasive testimony exacerbated grave concerns we had about her long-standing hostility towards the Second Amendment. As a result, the NRA strongly opposed her confirmation and made it clear at the time that we would be scoring this important vote.

The vote on Elena Kagan’s confirmation to the Court, along with the previous year’s confirmation vote on Sonia Sotomayor, are critical for the future of the Second Amendment. After careful consideration, the NRA-PVF announced today that it will not be endorsing Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for re-election in the 2010 U.S. Senate race in Nevada.

NRA members and other interested parties are encouraged to visit www.NRAPVF.org for more information as Election Day draws near.
