I just got a call from my bank yesterday. Someone tried to use my debit card to make a $500 purchase at a Publix in Florida. They declined the charge as it was obviously suspicious (I am in Oklahoma) but I still am wondering how they got my card #. I was holding it in my hand while talking to my bank, so they didn’t have my actual card, but I was wondering if maybe they tried to buy a bunch of stuff online. There isn’t a Publix where I live so I don’t know anything about them.
exactly the same scenario.. over and over
About 9 months ago, my card was hit for less than $2.00. This is a small and seemingly negligible amount. The security guy at my bank said they test batches of numbers with a small transaction amount before they go to the bigger amounts and the bank had been checking out all amounts under $5 that were outside the normal purchase area. It’s possible that the number could have been tested before a fake card was made.
Publix is an upscale grocery store chain located throughout the south east US. If they were attempting to spend 500, it would have been a mighty fine feast.
