MA Sen. John F. Kennedy voted against the 1957 Civil Rights Bill. Civil Rights was part of the Republican party platform in 1960. Getting some very good advice, late comer JFK got his phone call into Corretta Scott King before Nixon did when MLK got arrested in Birmingham. That’s it. A phone call beat real reform and flipped the Black vote to Democrats.
