1873 was a ballistical bananza, a watershed year in firearms and cartridge development. Things Hickock45 should / could have mentioned in this video: The Winchester 1866 preceded the 1873, of course, but it also fired the same Henry .44 Rimfire cartridge. The Spencer rifle actually fired a .56 caliber rimfire, not 54.

cool. I have a 73 in good shape. Got it over 50 years ago. I have no idea it’s worth. I was told around $2,000 and by another source around $5,000. Any one know? It’s complete and works with great patina.

In the fifties, I got a Winchester 1973 in 32 20.
I think that it was the weakest caliber in the Winchester 1873.

I have some of those guns. A 44-40 1873 Winchester made in 1876. A 45 Colt SAA also made in 1876. Also a Uberti Yellowboy 1866 in 44-40.

Yep, I believe that's what Hickok45 said. But, the henry used the .44 rimfire (even during the CW) correct?

I got a Winchester 1973 in 32 20. Wow, that is a little round for a rifle. Not much kick out of that but probably a sweet shooter. How many rounds will it hold?

I am on my way this Thursday for the Mouth of the Klamath. I hear they are catching salmon as we speak. Will be over there for a month fishing and seeing family. I will only have access to a computer a couple of times while I am over there to catch up on mail and FR. Aloha

Yes, the Henry repeater used the .44 rimfire, since center fire ammo hadn’t been invented yet. The Henry and the Spencer were both used during the CW. The Spencer was more rugged but a little slower to operate and also had a more powerful cartridge. Some Spencer models had a coffee grinder built into the butt stock, which made them a prized item, since coffee was sold as the whole bean back in those times.
