Koral Wira, 14, was fishing with her parents and a friend near Venice, Fla., when a barracuda went for her dad's bait and ended up biting her instead. Her dad, Rob Parker, submitted these photos and Wira told the story.
After anchoring the boat 4 miles off shore, Parker baited his rod with herring. Wira switched seats to get out of the hot sun, and watched as her dad cast. Moments later, she heard a splash and saw a long silver flash in the air. A barracuda jumped from the water and opened its mouth. As it hit her left arm, it clamped down with razor teeth.
Say What?
No kidding! That poor girl does not want her picture taken!
This is a great story.
The kid had some non-threatening lacerations, they were treated as expeditiously as possible, someday she will show those pictures to her grand-kids and the grand-kids will remark on what a tough cookie grandma was back in 2010.
Best regards,
I think dad has her by the hair holding her head up for the pic.
LOL!
My dad, a WWII infantry vet, had me helping him with a mailbox installation when I was a kid. He let me use the table saw, and I got timid and let a piece of wood kick back and it hit me in the upper lip pretty hard.
He looked at the damage, gave me some ice in a towel and told me head wounds were usually worse than they look or fatal, and that I should stand by while he finished the job (the concrete was mixed). I went inside to watch the tube while I waited.
My mother came home while he was finishing up, and wasn’t too thrilled when I showed her my lip, neatly severed from under the nose in a straight line. She took me to the emergency room where a doc just back from a conference on reducing scarring with stitches sewed me up. I can’t see the scar anymore.
I guess to somebody used to shrapnel and gunshot injuries, something requiring stitches doesn’t automatically make the “OMG RUSH TO THE HOSPITAL NOW” list.
If you’ve had the experience of reeling in a fish when suddenly a barracuda flashes in and bites of the body but you don’t feel a thing, you know this girl is lucky.
Bah!
That girl is fine. Walk it off babe, walk it off.
I remember when I was very young my sister(extreme allergies) got into some poison oak. Her face swelled up like the elephant man. Her arms and neck did too. No, wait, it was only one arm and half her neck and 3/4 of her face. It looked like she laid on her side in a bed of poison oak.
My dad took two rolls of film of her. It was awesome.
Don’t think half the posters read the article. The dad was great. That girl is one tough gal. Great story, thanks for posting.
Mama was the one TAKING the photo’s, so I doubt daddy’s in any trouble...
Lucky kid, and I bet I know what’s for dinner
LOL! seriously? ...still laughing...
The dad kind of took care of the cuda first.
For all we know, the girl was saying, "Dad, you've gotta get some pics of my arm!" She said she was more scared than in pain at the time.
The dad was great. He helped raise a fine strong daughter. Its a great story and she now has a picture to prove it thanks to her dad.
no pissing...
just telling you...been diving a long time and with many dives....
Other than bulls, white and tigers....nesting triggers are very aggressive...
Benn around barracudas...and all they do is cruise with divers....
Count me in that category. I set my own bones. I just did one two weeks ago in fact. I’ve been thinking about getting checked out for lack of pain. starting to get worried about how I don’t seem to feel pain like other people do. It’s like my nerves are only half awake.
According to the caption, it was the fish she was perturbed by and not wanting to be near, not her Dad hamming it up.
They have weird comic books in Japan about that ...
ohhhh and let’s face facts...if a damsel fish could really do damage....NO ONE could safely enter the ocean!
Totally serious. At the time we were in the middle of nowhere and dad said it was “for the doctor”.
LOL
I swiped a few of them and used to taunt her with them for years after.
She didn’t just swell up, she actually got physically sick. Vomiting, slept for days, etc.
lucky kid
thats some bite
