I’ve been wondering about that. A good many would have had to come from those regions of West Africa where Islam had made inroads, but if so, why did no trace of Islam make its mark in the New World? Lord knows the juju-based religions got into our bloodstream but you never hear anything about slaves praying to Mecca.

Don’t think they had the right to practice their religion or for that matter don’t think they had any rights. Maybe in hidden manner.

There was one scene in ROOTS where character of Kunta Kinte is shown trying to pray the Muslim way but being denied or advised not to.

Unlikely that many American slaves were Muslims, because the Muslim controlled slave trade in Afric aimed their raids at Christians and pagans, just as they do today.

Islam is big in Northern Africa, but the southern part, including the west coast, where most slaves came from, is now Christian. Not sure what it was before. Probably animist.

I don’t think a lot of slaves were mooselimbs.
