I've never liked the idea of leaving guns in unattended vehicles. Breaking into and stealing my car is one thing. Getting my gun at the same time would be more than I could bear.
Once criminals recognize what these gun compartments contain, they'll just increasingly target these vehicles.

Agreed. This looks like a niche marketing gimmick with unintended consequences. Bed cap and bed cover tech 20 years ago had better locks than that as well.
