That could be because he's left handed. Notice, too, that for all his supposed smarts, he hasn't learned to turn the paper he's signing to a 1:00 heading so he doesn't have to do that awkward upside down lefty writing thing. FYI, for all you lefties or if you have lefty kids, look at how your paper is placed when you're writing. The top is usually angled at 11:00 which makes it easy for a righty. That just ain't gonna work for a lefty. Turn it to a 1:00 angle and the upside down twisty wrist thing is solved!

My grandfather, who was right handed, wore his watch on his left hand and facing down rather than on top of his wrist (to read it upright) because of his job. It was something to do with his right hand working keys and such so it was easier to time things with his left hand.
