I bet she was “adopted” to be a servant to the family. That is not uncommon in that part of the world. she would basically be a slave by some definitions.

It was mentioned WAY back that any minor child living in the home was “adopted” automatically by the head of the house....Adopted was more like owned. She could have been an illegitimate child he took responsibility for or as you mentioned....Servant/slave labor that Lolo owned.

Yes, the rope indicates to me she was a slave, and that Soebarkah was a slave master.

Maybe this is why he had to leave Indonesia?

How Ironic that Washington, Jefferson, and Soebarkah were all Slave masters and British born Subjects.
