This is actually very consistent with today’s deomgraphics.In the mid-eighteen hundreds the south was Democratic to the same degree that today it is Republican.

The Republic started to die in 1865, with the final blows the amendments authorizing the income tax and expanding the franchise to non taxpayers and morons.

Its just taking a while to bury the corpse.
