I am at wits end here because of a problem when I run Windows XP on my iMac via bootcamp, so I am hoping some brainy FReeper can help me out.
The problem is that the display dims immediately after I log in, and I can't find the controls to brighten it back up to normal. It's almost as if it is going into some sort of screen-saver mode.
Note that there is absolutely no problem when I launch my spouse's profile or guest. It only happens when I log into my profile. And, it only happens when I am running Windows XP. There is no problem on the Mac OS side.
I am using a Dell keyboard and a Microsoft mouse.
Can someone help me figure this out?
Please???
System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Options
Uncheck the box that says dim the screen
Let me know if that worked for you.
Cheers
I haven’t a clue, but are you the sole administrator? If so, have you tried making one of the others the sole admin and seeing if there’s a change?
Oops, I forgot, you’re on a Mac. Duh! Why am I up so late?
Windows is notoriously finicky when it comes to video card drivers. Some of the most hideous system crashes I’ve had while using winblows was as a result of video card drivers.
Where do I find System Preferences?
Sorry not able to help but do have a question: Why run XP on an IMac?

Also, try this:

Another weird thing is that it starts up fine, and then after all the automatic startups are finished, it dims down. Something is telling it to dim. But I can’t figure out what.
Because I have to download work via a company-owned FTP that is not compatible with Mac.
Do you have a “dock” bar along the bottom of the screen?
It’s one of those icons.
Or, you might try right clicking on the background and going into the properties for the display.
Cheers
you should run virtualization, not boot camp. You wouldn’t have these issues because os x would control the hardware, and XP runs as guest. I am running that *now*.
Also, if you have an Apple icon on the top left of your screen, you can click on that to access the system preferences.
Cheers
Aha! I found it. It was in the Boot Camp control panel. The brightness was all the way down to “dim”, but the weird thing is I know damn well I didn’t open that thing before, so I have no idea who/what told it to dim itself.
Weird.
Excellent!
Yeah, I’m a bit perplexed, also. I do know that there is a bug with iMac not saving your dimming settings all the time, but I don’t think that was your problem. Perhaps some little gremlins were playing with your computer when you were away from it...
Cheers
Sometimes I can actually believe in gremlins...
to run windows only apps.
?????????? FTP I thought was cross platform...very standard, unless this is some type of special FTP security app.
there are some great FTP clients for the mac.
Jim Rob hates you? Series-ly my puter is having a problem loading. It's timing out with almost every click on FR. Is it my computer or is FR dragging?
