Crafton family enjoys rare closeness after seven years together at sea
The Washington Post ^ | 1 August, 2010 | Steve Hendrix

After living the past seven years in this cabin the size of a hotel bathroom, the Crafton family
seems in no hurry to clear out now...

"I went to a Wal-Mart the first week we were back, and I had to come home and take a nap," says Tom,
rolling his ice-gray eyes and leaning against the teak bulkhead. "It's way too soon for that. Some of our
cruising friends warned us about reentry. Baby steps, baby steps."

I hope they write a book as I’d love to add it to my collection...

Well, they didn’t go round the Horn, but they did things that I will never do and good for them.

Maybe it's Lieutenant Dan?

I would love to have the resources to pull something like this off.

Just this morning my wife said my 2 1/2 year old daughter asked if Daddy went to work to see his other kids...apparently I need to spend more time with my own children.

Resources can be found or worked around, I'm not sure if time lost could ever be.

Resources for a sailboat of this size are most certainly hard to come by....

As for time...I live an hour and a half away from work...it’s where we could afford to buy in the SF Bay Area. It’s not sustainable long term...the wife and I agree that I need to find work closer to home.

More power to them, my goal in my youth was to float down the entire length of the Mississippi River...

Well, good for them!
We only get one life. I’m glad they are living it together as a family.

I've know a lot of people who have driven that distance for their entire 30 year career. Most car pooled and just liked where they lived and didn't want to move.

Some people are happy doing that I guess. In your case, can you work from home or start a home business? What about increasing your hours per day but having a shorter week, like maybe 4 days a week?

I’m glad they are living it together as a family.Same here... Our society would be better off, IMO, if we could get back to making a living alongside our families. Even schooling should now be home based. Modern technology can eliminate brick and mortar public schools, the daily grind of getting children to and from school, and expensive teachers and administrator's salaries.

We the people need to make a few adjustments to our modern society while we still have one. We ought to be colonizing other planets, and not withering on the vine...
