I've always been fascinated by the dual nature of petrified wood: fossil and gemstone both.

How was petrified wood formed?
It was scared stiff.

(Sorry, late night humor.)

I have a collection of about twenty pounds of petrified wood. I found the fossils where some real intellectual types had used them as rocks for a fire ring.

Picture # 2 is nearly both. The petrified wood has the colors of Mexican black/red opals. They are magnificant.

I bought a few slices of petrified wood at the Petrified Forest National Park shop, back in 1971. Image my surprise when I moved into a rental house in 1981 and there was a piece of beautifully colored petrified wood, weighing about 3 lbs, sitting on the fireplace mantle 9approx. 4 inches x 3 inches.

It now belongs to my granddaughter.
