SAN QUENTIN STATE PRISON -- A man newly arrived at San Quentin State Prison after being convicted of murder and drunken driving in the death of a 9-year-old Novato girl was fatally stabbed by another inmate, authorities said Tuesday.

Edward John Schaefer, 44, of Novato was stabbed in the chest and neck at about 10:35 a.m. Monday in the prison's reception center yard and died that night, said Lt. Sam Robinson, prison spokesman.

The suspect is Frank Anthony Souza, 31, a convicted murderer from San Jose, Robinson said. Souza had fashioned a homemade weapon, authorities said.

Schaefer was killed just 10 days after he arrived at San Quentin. The prison's reception center is where many convicted offenders are processed before they are transferred to other prisons.

The father and daughter were in a crosswalk on San Marin Drive at San Carlos Way in Novato when Schaefer sped his motorcycle in between a car that had stopped for the two and a parked vehicle.

Authorities said his blood-alcohol level was between 0.11 and 0.16 percent, more than the 0.08 percent that constitutes drunken driving. Schaefer struck Melody and her father at more than 60 mph, said prosecutor Geoff Iida.

Aaron Osheroff lost his right leg as a result of the crash. He now walks with a temporary prosthetic leg, his wife and Melody's mother, Kimberly Osheroff, said Tuesday. She said of Schaefer's slaying, "I'm not one of those people who rejoice in such things. I don't think people being slain by another person is justified.

I’m speculating that Souza killed the guy to make a name for himself.

After reading the article, I see this as Souza’s attempt to gain protection from the White Power Group and to prove his bravery.

He already knows he will die in prison...one way or another.

Plus lanesplitting at 60 in stopped traffic? That’s just blindingly stupid. 10 MPH *maybe*, depending on circumstances and with your brakes covered and your eyes open and your full attention to your surroundings.

Stopped traffic without any obvious cause *means* something is up up ahead.

Yeah, probably not a personal beef, just a routine business matter while doing time.

Hard to feel sorry for someone when they've had 9 previous chances.

I can think of eight judges who likely deserve hard time in prison as well.

That may be true, but inmates held in states with not death penalty and will never be released can be gotten to for services on the inside.

Not much of anything can be done for the felon but much can be done for relatives and friends on the outside.

I’ve often thought of Dahmer in Wis. in this regard.

That's how some savvy guards in Wisconsin got around that state's lack of a death penalty in the case of Jeffrey Dahmer. They just assigned him to a two man work detail with another homicidal maniac who was armed with a steel pipe.

Works for me.

Cool picture. Could have been used the other day when there was a thread going on how we have too many laws and too many people in prison.

This guy likes prison. He was made for it. Signed up for it on career day. Now he has graduated with an upper degree in worthlessness.

Yeah, there’d always be an elite club of, ahem, technicians.

They might get into a little family argument once in a while and kill off one of their own.

But if you wanted someone dead, you “let ‘em hang out” with the club members. If you wanted someone to behave...you just show them to the club members.

I wonder if it’s really that way somewhere? Sounds like a good movie otherwise:

THE TECHNICIANS!

Coming to a prison yard near you soon.
