Dam fails in eastern Iowa, causing massive flooding

A dam on an eastern Iowa lake suffered a "catastrophic" failure Saturday, sending a massive amount of water into nearby communities and forcing residents to flee, officials said.

The Lake Delhi dam, about 45 miles north of Cedar Rapids, failed as a result of "massive rain -- a very unusually high amount this season," according to Jim Flansburg, communications director for Gov. Chet Culver.

Culver told CNN that nearly 10 inches of rain had recently fallen in a 12-hour period in the area and was "too much water for the dam to hold."

Here’s a link to a Cedar Rapids TV site, with a more up to date report. It’s getting ugly over there,, I am monitoring WMT radio and they are giving hourly, on the scene reports.

"The governor said such a failure had never happened before."

Unexpected and unprecedented. The gov't at work, again.

From the picture, it’s hard to tell if it’s structurally damaged. I see two spill gates wide open, and plenty of water is spilling through. There must be some other damage as well that isn’t obvious in the photo.

Oh, never mind. It looks like it’s washed away to the left of the dam structure. I guess that the spill gates were probably already open to try and alleviate the pressure but it was too much.

Too much water for the Dam to hold !!!!! Is that right? Who is the Idiot that designed the spillways and who was the bigger Idiot that approved them?? Wait, I know there has to be federal pork money in there someplace. By the time they paid off all the corruption and graft there was a $1000.00 left for the Dam Dam’s Design!

if you read some of the links at the KCRG link I posted up thread it will describe the ownership. It is privately owned and is over 30 years old.

Never let facts get in the way of a good rant. Cheetahcat probably doesn’t even know how to use an inflation calculator to see how much $1K in the 1920s would be worth today. ($1000 in 1928 would be about $12,746.49 today.)

No much older and used for power generation.
