Catfish tend to suck the hook in really deep rather than just catching the lip like most sport fish.

I did not know that. So even if you wanted to let it go, the damage is done and it would most likely die from tearing it's guts up I guess.

Well, that really does change things. If that's the case then it would be best to not release it. Unless of course the hook was easily removed from the mouth instead of from the gut that is.
