WESTMORELAND COUNTY -- Pennsylvania State Police are trying to piece together the puzzling death of a motorcyclist in Westmoreland County.

According to police reports, William Mark Amos, 47, of Export, was riding on Route 819 in Salem Township when the deer crossed into his path on Friday morning.

The bike collided with the deer about 100 yards south of Ridge Road.

But police said that Amos had a gunshot wound to the head and that a gun was also recovered at the crash scene.

Police said Amos, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Quite simple realy.Biker had several dwi”s, license suspended revoked, had a few beers that day, know he will have blood tested at hospital, knows he’s facing 6-10 years in prison, decided he wasn’t going.

a few years back a law enforcement officer went to shoot a horse or cow who had been seriously injured, the bullet hit the skull of the animal, bounced back and hit the officer...I think it was a two-fer.

cops standing over the scene, scratching their heads and wondering “What the Heck....”

I remember a case of a man who stuffed socks with Grape Nuts and beat people to death. Investigators on the scene were puzzled when they found bits of Grape Nuts around the dead people. Finally one detective said, “We’ve got a cereal killer on our hands.”

He realized he was mortally wounded after the collision, in excess pain, and ended it with his own gun.

That is what I thought. As far as wearing a helmet, I NEVER take mine off, it is just too loud without it. I just view it as a $100 insurance policy. Besides I have cool football team logos all over mine from around the region/country.

My hunch: The rider was paralyzed (or thought he was) from the waist down and didn’t want to live that way. So he ended it.

Sad sad sad story.

Simple rule: Local under 35 mph with no real traffic, I MIGHT go without a helmet. Anything else? Full helmet and full armor.

Now here is a stupid statement and very unnecessary. He was shot in the head, a helmet wouldn't have helped him at all!

So how is the deer?

Did it survive?

Because usually in a motorcycle/deer collision, the deer wals away.

>>>it makes no sense whatsoever to be belted in a5,000 pound hummer and be allowed to ride your harley, with your 10 year old daughter hanging on to you 70 miles per hour on the freeway without a helmet......pathetic<<<<

I said that?? Gee. You don’t read between the lines do you?

A grown person should have the right to decide whether he straps himself to his hummer or whether he wears a helmet on his motorcycle. But, of course others who do not ride have the right to decide that for him. That’s the law.
That’s pathetic.By the way helmet laws as well as seat belt laws were forced on the public by the insurance lobby by the fed witholding federal highway funds, and by people who didn’t mind their own business. Did anyone’s insurance go down after the seat belt laws were passed? No.

We don’t stop people from parachuting, jumping off bridges with bungy cords, riding horse’s without helmets, climbing mountains, ski’ing, or many other dangerous acts, but we think it is our right to tell them what to do in their own automobile. People make bad decision all their lives, but it is their right to make those decisions.

It’s an old argument and those who feel they have the right to tell other’s how to live always use the excuse that they have to help pay the insurance for those who decide to place themslves in jeopardy, but that is a bogus argument. Mostly they just wish to enforce their own view on others.

Kids?? That’s another story entirely.

Perhaps the self-inflicted shot was accidental. Maybe a gun he was carrying somehow fired during the crash hitting him in the head.

Ya never know.

Not accidental. He ate his gun after crashing the bike. History of DUI arrests and apparently this accident was alcohol related as well.

It's definitely a strange case, especially since the biker apparently shot himself after he hit the deer on his motorcycle.
