public defender is always free of charge, but if he makes more than $2000/mos, he could not get a public defender.
he makes $25k/yr.
so, he is not qualified for a public defender

I think Anton was suggesting he could get a public defender to take his case on the side for cash. The PD would be a lot cheaper than someone in a practice, but would do a better job than as a PD, theoretically, because he’s paying more than the PD would have otherwise gotten.

I guess I didn’t express myself well.

I have several friends who are public defenders here in Cincinnati Ohio. They are also private attorneys. They take public defender cases for what the County pays which is about $40 per hour. They would take a case in their private paying client practices for a lot less than $2000 unless it was a jury trial. But since they don’t have private law offices, they are a bit hard to find. So, I suggested the boyfriend go to the courthouse to see them in person.
