I like Mel, but he is both an alcoholic and a manic-depressive (bad, but not uncommon combination).

When people like that get drunk and angry...they say and do outrageous things that they would not normally do--things completely out of character.

I didn’t know he was bipolar. I would suppose the alcohol would be his way to self medicate. So many creative and talented people are bipolar.
