In colonial Jamestown, Virginia, the court considered any violation calling for a jail sentence of one year or more was best handled by hanging citing that one year or more in jail was inhumane punishment I once found a website that held some of the archives of The Old Bailey in London...the UK's most famous criminal court.The two main punishments were "transportation" (meaning being banished to Australia,etc) and hanging...even for crimes that seemed to be relatively minor.
