Sounds to me like Mel’s learning what it’s like to have one’s life entangled with a calculating, cold-blooded user and abuser.
I am reminded of what Lady Caroline Lamb said of Byron: “ . . . mad, bad, and dangerous to know.”
Such people can destroy you if you’re not smart enough to keep them out of your life.
