Tomorrow is D-day for Windows XP SP2 users. Granted, Windows XP SP2 will still work, but tomorrow is the last Patch Tuesday for the venerable OS which means it will become more unstable and less secure as time goes on. Simply applying SP3 will suffice to continue running a supported platform, but here are five reasons to consider switching off of Windows XP entirely.
1. Hardware Support. Windows XP is archaic, and it is designed to run on outdated hardware. As new technologies are introduced, it is unlikely that Windows XP will be compatible or able to take advantage of them. Windows 7 provides support for multitouch displays, and also has greatly improved memory and power management features.
2. Improved Drivers Installation. Windows 7 has a superior system for automatically detecting and installing drivers. Windows XP sort of has this capability, but more often than not the search for drivers yields nothing and requests that you insert a driver disc from the vendor. Install a new piece of hardware in Windows 7, and most of the time it will automatically be added along with the correct driver without any additional user interaction.
3.Security. Windows XP lacks many of the crucial security controls that have been introduced in Windows Vista and Windows 7. Looking at the vulnerabilities that have been discovered since the launch of Windows 7, the Windows 7 operating system is frequently unaffected, or when it is affected by the same flaw as Windows XP, the result of an exploit is minor while the Windows XP system will be completely owned by the attacker.

Microsoft doesn’t provide the drivers; that is up to the hardware manufacturer. Microsoft provides the OS and the model and API for drivers for custom hardware, but it’s the responsibility of the hardware vendor to provide the driver.

“Do you know about the Gutenberg Project?”
Yes. I have read several books from them. Also converted some to audiobooks using text to voice programs. I also like looking at books scanned in by Google Books. Librivox is a wonderful resource for public domain audiobooks. I can also get Netlibrary audiobooks and Overdrive audiobook and ebooks through my local libraries.

CNN
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Windows XP, which debuted nine years ago in 2001, will continue to be with us for yet another decade.
Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500) announced late Monday that it would allow some Windows 7 customers to buy Windows XP "downgrade" licenses until January 2020. Those licenses allow customers to swap out the newer operating system and instead install a legal copy of the older one.
Microsoft initially planned to let Windows 7 customers downgrade to Windows XP only through April 2010, but that end-date was quickly extended until October 2011. Now, the company says it will extend the downgrade option through the entire Windows 7 sales cycle, which is scheduled to last until January 2020.
. . .
Though the software giant said its customers are moving quickly to adopt the newest Windows version, it acknowledged that some still want the option to downgrade. A full 74% of Microsoft's business customers are still using the outdated Windows XP, Windows marketing head Tami Reller said this week at Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference in Washington, D.C.
