My husband may have an opportunity to relocate to the Raleigh Durham area. Both of us would work in the Durham urban area.
Can anyone provide ideas on conservative areas, good churches and christian private schools (elementary).
Even just a general feel for the area would be helpful.

Durham? Doubt it. Find some place outside of town, reasonably far away from the universities, maybe a rural neighboring county where houses are cheaper and taxes are lower anyway. Just my one and a half cents.
I grew up just outside of Durham — graduated from high school there in 1983. A “Conservative Area” does not EXIST there. And I’m sure it’s FAR worse now than it was then. Chapel Hill is, arguably, worse. Think of Chapel Hill as San Francisco without the Bay, Alcatraz, or the earthquakes. Raleigh, the capital city, is like any other capital city — liberal.
If I had to choose ANY areas to live in the Raleigh-Durham area, it would actually be to the EAST of Raleigh. Most of my family still lives there, in Johnston County, North Carolina. It tends to be a bit more rural than urban, though it’s growing too. And perfect it is NOT, but it is FAR more Conservative than other areas in and around RDU.
It would be a bit of a drive to the Research Triangle, depending on where you located, and some areas in Johnston County ought to be avoided too! But, there are some nice places out that way — and some great churches, and a good variety to choose from too. I’ve visited quite a number of them, know a number of Pastors there, and have even preached in a couple of them.

Any questions or concerns, I’d be glad to try and address. Full disclosure — my Mom & Dad live in Four Oaks, in south Johnston county, and I have aunts, uncles and cousins, all over, in Garner, Clayton, Selma, Smithfield,Princeton, Pine Level, Benson, Micro, Bailey, Bagley.... Hope I can give you some insight.
North Raleigh, Cary, and Apex would be good choices. My neighborhood on the Cary/Apex line is very conservative. Durham and Chapel HIll as well as Carborro and Pittsboro are a definite no... Even the Dems are pretty conservative in Cary/Apex so, you really cant go wrong there. Cary is listed in Money magazine’s best places to live every year. They could probably let you in on good private Christian schools in the area, as well.

Anyplace in Orange County is OUT. Even in the northern part of the county, which is a bit more conservative, you’ll still be paying the massive property taxes (2nd highest in the state) that the County Commission imposes through the fiat of unrealistic upward revaluations.
Durham County - the extreme southern part and the northern part, once you get out of the CITY of Durham, may be more to your liking (up around Bahama or Rougemont).
Wake - Spotty. Some parts of Apex/Cary are Republican and family-oriented, with even some large conservative churches. Up north of Raleigh (Wake Forest/Franklinton/Rolesville) is also conservative with good churches (my in-laws go to a solid Independent Baptist church in Rolesville). Only problem with this area is the commuting distance to RTP - which will be made worse and/or more expensive should the state legislature ever succeed in putting a toll on the 540.
Chatham - Nice county, relatively low property taxes, just stay away from Pittsboro proper. The town is being overrun with Chapel Hill hippie types. The parts of the county in the east, near Jordan Lake as you approach Apex in Wake, are probably nice and rural.

My folks lived in the Apex/Morrisville area for 25 years. Cary swallowed them whole about 4 years ago and they had to move. HUGE caustion about Cary. Their taxes, regulations, restrictions, codes and so forth are horrendous! Bureaucracies are TORTURE! And if you live “just outside” the town limits of Cary — you WON’t for long! They will SUCK you in for your Tax $$ if it KILLS them. My parents MOVED to ESCAPE Cary. Apex is now held captive to Cary. Morrisville has now been virtually swallowed by Cary. My own personal experience — nice place to visit, shop, etc., but living there is EXPENSIVE, hectic, and a pain in the BUTT.
IN towns NORTH of Raleigh — Loiusburg, Wake Forest, Rolesville, or in South Wake County like Holly Springs or Fuquay-Varina — you would find better living conditions, less regulation and restriction, less urbanization, a few more “Conservative” instotutions and those who espouse such ideals — and churches as well. You WOULD, in those town/cities, STILL be in Wake County — so your tax base would STILL be higher than most in not ALL the surrounding counties (with the possible exception of Durham & Orange (where Chapel Hill is located).
my folks live in new hill; can see the lights of the nuc-ular plant from front yard. they grow some excellent squash, too, although she said it grows really fast. hmmm...
