An admirable chess player. A sad and wasted life.

In his later years, Fischer lived in Hungary, Germany, the Philippines, and Japan. During this time he made increasingly anti-American and anti-Semitic statements, despite his Jewish ancestry. When his U.S. passport was revoked, he was detained by Japanese authorities for nine months in 2004 and 2005 under threat of extradition. In February 2005, Iceland granted him right of residence as a “stateless” alien and issued him a passport.[5] When Japan refused to release him to that country on these grounds, Iceland’s parliament voted to give him full citizenship in March.[6] After that, the Japanese authorities released him to that country, where he lived until his death in 2008.[7]

He was mentally ill, probably a borderline, off-again, on-again schizophrenic. For a few years after Rekyavik ‘72 he was the Tiger Woods of the chess world. Membership in the U.S. Chess Federation peaked in 1974.

He lived in the Philippines 2000 - 2002, and was seeing a young woman at the time. Now she’s claiming he fathered her bastard daughter. Not everyone who knew them then agrees, well, we’ll see.

What a brilliant player. Truly a freak when it came to chess. And of course, he was also a first class nut.

What a sad life. The family life was a mess. He was practically an orphan with nutty commie mom. He was a huge American hero after he won but he had terrible mental problems. Sad.

I remember watching the chess matches in '72 on PBS.
The broadcasts were hosted by Shelby Lyman of the Manhattan Chess Club and believe it or not,
we rooted for Fisher like it was a sports event.

I had no idea that such a (large) Wikiquote page existed. . .

. . . and the bio page is fascinating.

Thanks for the links.

A crucifix on his gravestone (?) Did not realize he converted to Christianity.

Could be the symbol from top of the white King.
