Sorry for your loss.

I was on a service call in MN for three days. My old Black Lab (16 y/o) was sick and the Vet suggested he be put down before I left. Sis watched him at my house and my heart dropped a foot when she told me he was getting worse. Wouldn’t eat or drink. Got back home at 11:30 pm. Sat down on the floor near where he was laying. He died at midnight with his head in my lap ... I cried like a school girl.

I am convinced he wanted me to pet him and see me one last time. He looked up at me, took a breath, and was gone.

My sister just called me hysterical. She hasn’t been home since my mom passed. She feels it too. Sandy was “everyones’ dog. I have a biscuit here in front of me from this morning that she didn’t want. I have to lay down, I am getting a bad headache. I thank you all for your thoughts, prayers and comfort. This is going to take me a long time. My family will close around me as they are all very protective since my mom died and I am by myself. I always had Sandy,so they knew I wasn’t alone. With Sandy gone, I’m alone.
Thanks to you all for getting me through the first few hours. I’m going to try and nap. I love all of you FReepers, you are all the best. When I’m feeling a little better, I will make a donation to Jim in memory of Sandy.
God Bless you all and thank you.

I’m weeping with you.

It has been 7 years since I lost my Brittany.. I told her to find my dad.

You can’t replace a fur face that you have lost..You can only choose to love again.

2 labs and a cat in my house now.

It’s not disloyal to get another dog.

My husband didn’t want another dog...

After a river of tears, I told him that Brit left me primed to love..I couldn’t just dry it up.

We rescued 2 pups for kill shelters.

My sympathy goes out to you. Loosing a trusted friend is heartbreaking, and hurts as much as as the loss of any other member of the family. I lost my Siberian Husky a month ago, and it still hurts. Semper Fi

“Do turtles, frogs or gophers have souls?”

yes.

Moses 3:19 And out of the ground I, the Lord God, formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and commanded that they should come unto Adam, to see what he would call them; and they were also living souls; for I, God, breathed into them the breath of life, and commanded that whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that should be the name thereof.

You are in our prayers. Losing a dog is the worst — but you will eventually bounce back. And please don’t rule out some day getting another. You’ll know when the time is right.

Tribute to Dogs

Gentlemen of the Jury: The best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name may become traitors to their faith.

The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man’s reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us, may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads.

The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog. A man’s dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master’s side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer. He will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings, and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

If fortune drives the master forth, an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him, to guard him against danger, to fight against his enemies. And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by the graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even in death.

George Graham Vest - c. 1855

My Tasha wagged her tail when I put her up on the vet’s table - she thought it was just another great adventure.

Then she put her head in my hands - and she was gone.

9 years old, cancer blocking her windpipe.

It’s awful.

Just, right now I feel it would be disloyal to Sandy to get another pup. Stupid, no I don’t think so.

Dogs are social animals. For dogs, being alone is "just wrong". Sandy would understand.

My wife and I had two cats when our human children came along. One was a kitten we got when we were newlyweds, and the other we got a month after the Challenger explosion. The older one slept on the corner of my wife’s pillow, cuddled her when she was sad, did tricks for her to make her happy. He developed severe kidney disease, and she had to have him put down. The old guy was gray, and the young guy was orange, and called Challie. The day our old cat died, Challie started sleeping on her pillow. It was like he’d been trained and briefed on how to take care of her. Later, when our youngest daughter was a baby, we got two more kittens. The day Challie died, after having a series of strokes, one of the new kitties moved onto our bed, and became my wife’s nap kittie, snuggled with her, and kept her from being too sad. The old gray kitty got nicknamed Zipper when he was young, and my wife and I still see a gray streak once in a while. My youngest daughter, who was born after he died, claims to remember him. She found a picture of him one time, and said “I Know him!”

I don’t know if your kitties will be like ours, but if not, find a new doggie who needs a home. My wife didn’t like dogs. A stray that she’d been feeding rescued her and our children, including the baby, from another stray, a large and agressive Chow dog, and got adopted. A 35lb. mutt ran off the 70lb or so chow. The old dog has a new understudy, now, too. Mama found a little 10lb ugly dog that got abandoned in our neighborhood, and adopted her. Now she loves her little doggie, too.

Each of them has a different personality, and helps us in a different way. We’ve got one more cat, now, too. Don’t know what we’d do without them. Love your dog, and miss her, but not too much. If someone else hadn’t posted the Rainbow Bridge story for you, I would have.

My mom had a little dog when I was a baby. It died in her arms after being hit by a car. Years later, when her dad died, she dreamed of them. Her dad and Puddles, the dog, were out fishing at my grandpa’s favorite lake. They were hanging out together, waiting for her. When I get there, there is going to be a big crowd.

Be thou comforted, little dog, Thou too in Resurrection shall have a little golden tail. - Martin Luther

Nothing can be more express: Away with vulgar prejudices, and let the plain word of God take place. They "shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption, into glorious liberty," -- even a measure, according as they are capable, -- of "the liberty of the children of God." - John Wesley
