This isn't the sort of thing a manager or player does without approval of his team's ownership. I suspect we may see more announcements like this, perhaps to the point that sports reporters’ hackneyed interviews may include a political question or two.

Cardinal ownership is indeed close friends with the lukewarm conservatives, the Bushes.

Having said that, TLR’s remarks were clearly off the cuff. He has a very secure position here in St. Louis and pretty much says and does what he wants....even if if means sometimes losing baseball games ;-)
