Gee. That changes everything!
They must not have contacted you when they did the rankings.

Or you can go Ubuntu 10.04...it free ;>

Mint 9 "Isadora" is based on Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" and is much more user friendly for linux noobs.

I have an 18 month old aluminum unibody mac laptop. Apple changed out a defective battery but I had to pay for a new magnetic power cord with the old one frayed and stopped working earlier this month.

Windows 7 is really, really good. Very intuitive.

I bought a new laptop and frankly didn’t care one way or another. I figured I’d just deal with it. Windows 7 meant nothing to me. But, it’s been a real plus and I enjoy it.

( If you are into networking, or configurations, the Windows non Professional isn’t as good as XP. )

It depends on what your criteria is and how long you tend to keep pc’s. I am biased towards xp. My wife has windows 7 on a new laptop and we both hate it. But there are performance benefits of win7 others have mentioned you should consider and my issues with win 7 could possibly be overcome if I spent more time on a win 7 machine and got used to it. But if I had a choice I would definitely try out the user interface on a win 7 machine before buying one to make sure you have no issues with it.

I’ve been running Win 7 since it was issued on October 22. Not one crash. Not one. Can’t exactly say that for XP, can you? I really think this is a good OS. The computer professionals in the family agree, and one who was a dedicated Linux-head was impressed in the course of working with my machinery.

I had lots of XP-P machines.

They gave me far more trouble than they seemed to give most people.

I have WIN 7-Home Professional or some such . . .

IT IS WONDERFUL. VERY STABLE. Handles more windows open with less trouble. Better error checking and fixing, seemingly.

I wouldn’t go back. Machine I just crashed blowing cold canned air on hot components was also WIN7 but was dual boot XP . . . I never used the XP.

Windows XP will soon be losing update support from Microsoft that could leave your computer vulnerable to security hazards. Windows 7 from what I have read is a winner. I also use Macs, but sometimes am frustrated by their idiosyncrasies.

I'm a Linux guy, at work and at home. However, for the 3 programs I use that require Windows I do have my machine set up to dual boot Ubuntu and Win 7. I like it as much as XP which I have to use at work on occasion too.

Win 7 is not bad. I won't be going back to Windows as my primary OS - too many security issues and I just plain like Ubuntu. But on the same hardware Win 7 boots in about the same time as Ubuntu (10.04). For the once or twice a month I have to use Windows at home, 7 is hard to beat.

XP is going to “End of Life” soon

In four years.

I’ve been using Linux for about 10 years. For the past couple years Fedora, specifically.

It does everything I want to do with my computer. And it does many things that I simply cannot do with Windows.

I do run a couple Windows-only programs using WINE (Let’s you run some Windows programs on other operating systems like Linux). It just works and is very stable for me.

I have not purchased Windows since I last bought Windows 98. I have used it plenty though (seven years as a software QA engineer and 1 year as a PC repair technician). Nearly every time I interface with Windows, I come away frustrated by the experience.

Win 7 & run XP in VM

And if that still doesn't meet your needs, Windows 7 comes with downgrade rights to XP.

Some people report that running older XP applications on 7 is problematic and that they experience success running those same programs using Wine on Linux.

OMG....Swordmaker please explain to Keith that macbots should never talk bad about windows in a windows thread.

Win 2000 has some significant security gaps which have been closed in newer versions.
