New PC: WinXP or Win 7?
FreeRepublic ^ | 6/30/2010 | Oshkalaboomboom

My old computer died the other day and I'm picking up a new one tomorrow. I always load the OS myself and for the last few times I've stayed with XP Pro SP3 because it's stable and reliable for what I use the pc for. I've heard decent things about Windows 7 but for now I'm thinking of staying with XP. If you had the chance to reload your pc today would you stick with XP or move to Win 7, and why? No flavors of Unix are an option, I'm sure it's a great OS but I want Windows for this one so just opinions on those 2 please.

I still have a win 98 system in the basement because of an old ISA SCCI (sp?) adapter that it runs off of. Memory measured in megabytes, Pentium 66, I upgraded the hard drive to a 2 gig if I remember correctly.

Every now and then I want to scan a negative so I fire the old beast up and am surprised when it works.

I try to stay out of the flame wars and for the most part don’t care that much when they happen.

My biggest problem is with the people jumping into windows threads telling people that have never used Macs that if they will just buy one, they will never have problems again.

I dropped $1200 bucks on a Mac laptop Christmas before last. From a hardware standpoint, it has performed worse than the Windows laptops I have owned. I must admit that Apple was great when the battery crapped out in a year and installed a new one for me for free. But when the power cord frayed and stopped working, I found out it was a common problem with the magnetic cords. I went down to the Apple store and found out that they do not consider the part defective and I had to pay for the replacement.

I spent months helping my wife get the Mac set up to work with her school software, and eventually bought a Win 7 netbook for her to do some of those chores.

To me, buy Mac with a smiley face responses are more offensive than than you guys calling each other names for hundreds of posts.

You are called a troll because you like to troll on Apple threads.

Since this thread was explicitly WinXP or Win7, why even talk about the Mac? THAT is the troll... And it started in post 2.

Thread hijacking is the ultimate troll, and it started with the second post, and you're doing your best to keep it hijacked.

So unless you have comments about WinXP versus Win7, I'd say butt the heck out. Or be considered a troll, and wear your badge proudly in this thread.

ESPECIALLY when the guy who started the thread is debating about moving his WinXP install to a Win7 install. He's not looking to change to a Mac, he wants to know if Win7 is a decent upgrade.

For some people, I swear it's heresy if you don't run their OS... And they get upset when you call them on their near-religious obsession...

The person is upgrading from XP, and may not realize there are other alternatives out there to 7. A lot of people don't, equating "Windows" with "computer." It is advice that the person can accept or reject.

Good advise puget. I’ll get back on topic and as swordmaker says stop feeding the trolls.

Windows 7 is the fastest growing OS. It’s been a huge hit and is the new standard replacing XP. The good news is win7 has very good security while still being user friendly. Oh and deifnitely go 64bit now that there are plenty of drivers out there for 64-bit.

So then no problem with a Windows guy bouncing in at the start of each Mac thread and saying “Windows 7 - because it just works and runs the software you need”. That’s not a troll?

You’re trying to justify trollish behavior because of your fervent support for an OS. If you really believe people do not know about other OSes (like Mac, or Linux) then you really are naive.

EVERYONE knows about Apple and Macs; most people CHOOSE not to use their computers. That’s the fact, and one you apparently don’t want to recognize.

Now, back to the question at hand - do you have any leanings towards WinXP or Win7? What would YOU recommend?

I’m just wondering what happened to our Linux guys who would suggest saving money by upgrading to Linux.

For example, in the recent "iPhone 4 video embodies new-tech aesthetic" thread, you immediately wrote "HTC EVO. You have removable 32 GB MicroSD cards to record all the video you want, and change them out in a matter of seconds." You just did exactly what you describe as "trollish behavior," and it wasn't even someone asking what phone to buy.

Now that wasn't directly a troll, but it showed the usual ignorance in posts directed against Macs. Such ignorance is a common feature of trolls, which would lend to me calling it trollish.

EVERYONE knows about Apple and Macs

I still know a lot of people who think "Windows" equals "computer" and "Explorer" equals "Internet." They may have heard of this thing called "Mac" and but they really don't know what it is.

Exactly. Swordmaker even posted in another thread how he's been running a VM of Win7 - completely unprotected, no AV/AM installed - for a month without a single problem. Anyone who brings up viruses and infections for Win7 is pretty much just spreading FUD at this point. It's solid and secure.

Oh and deifnitely go 64bit now that there are plenty of drivers out there for 64-bit.

Totally agree. I had only ONE device that did not have Win7 64 bit drivers - my old Minolta/QMS 2300DL color laser. I still use it a lot, because I bought the extra-capacity, dual trays AND the automatic duplexer, and it's a gorgeous printer, in terms of output.

Minolta dropped support about 3 years ago, didn't even support Vista officially. However, it runs fine off the Virtual XP I have, so I can simply print to file in Win7 (usually to PDF), then print from Virtual XP without a problem. An extra step due to Minolta not supporting the product, but I can still use it, thanks to Win7 Pro having the Virtual XP.

So just to be clear, in your world:

- Busting into a "which version of Windows" thread and saying "get a Mac, it works better" is factual, accurate, and perfectly nice and pleasant. Not an attack, a suggestion to consider other alternatives.

- Entering into an Apple thread and suggesting a non-Apple product is trollish and ignorant. An attempt to attack and defame all things Apple.

Can you SEE your hypocrisy? Or are your glasses so Jobs-tinted that everything is unicorns and rainbows?

Macs definitely aren't perfect. OTOH, despite claims to the contrary, I've never heard a Mac owner say they were. So far with mine I've had the hard drive die after 2+ years. But then I've had lots of PC hard drives die on me over the years. I'm just glad the Mac gave me enough advance warning so that I could replace it before it died. Also, the ball in the mouse stopped working very well after a couple of years, no matter how much I cleaned it. I think my kids got some gunk in there.

Other than that, no problems. I did spend a lot of time searching for drivers for my UPS, until I realized the Mac doesn't need drivers to be installed, and just integrates the UPS into the system's power management. I attribute that headache to me being a PC person, ignorant of the easier Mac ways.

Would you say you doing it recently was acceptable? As I told you, there is no full editing program for the EVO, especially not one even close to iMovie on the iPhone, and being able to swap SD cards would be useless in this case because you need all the video accessible to edit.

You didn't even suggest a remotely viable alternative to what the article was about. It could in no way be considered helpful.

BTW, in case you didn't notice, often the "Get a Mac" or "Get Linux" posts are jokes. I guess you didn't notice the smiley.

Do you thing Anti-R is this obtuse? Or is he just having fun littering the Inernets with stupidity?

His logic is so broken I say he has to just be playing around.

According to you, no. According to Swordmaker (who started that thread), yes. Unless, of course, it's suggesting an Apple piece of gear then it's always OK...

But back on topic of THIS THREAD (I answered your post in that other thread): which do you recommend, WinXP or Win7? Or do you not have enough experience to make a recommendation either way?

Actually, not a macbot. A techbot. Perhaps someone can read my other post to you: use Win7 in a 64 bit version.

MS has a great OS in Win7. After Sp2, XP is good. Vista is an abortion. OSX is also a great OS.

MSNBC sucks:and you would not have it if MS hadn’t help start it, fanboi.
