Not a sarge, not drill sergeant, not a “Gunny”!*
Staff Sergeant USMC: Yes; sergeants USMC are not referred to as...”sarge”!!!!!
Drill Instructor (DI) USMC: Yes
“Honorary” Gunnery Sergeant USMC: Yes*
*For example...
Ermey was given, some time after his service as a S/Sgt in the USMC, and after his having established himself as an “actor,” an honorary gunnery sergeant “promotion” by a CMC of the Corps.
“This serves to remind me that Benjamin Franklin was the recipient of one or more honorary doctorates. Honorary doctorates are not earned degrees, nor conferred on the basis of work done or academic achievements met, etc..
I have read, that Franklin thereafter went by Doctor Franklin. Some say he even insisted that members of Congress address him as such. Whether or not anyone ever took him seriously and complied, I dont know. Gomer Pyle (Jim Nabors), and others, BTW, have also been promoted to honorary Marine Corps ranks, but of course, Nabors was best known anyway as a comic.
Just MY Opinions...
