Scientists aren't completely sure why, but low-hanging moons tend to look exceptionally large

I learned 50 years ago in Jr High science that it looks that way because the steep angle of the moonlight is refracted by the subsequently "thicker" atmosphere.

Are these the same "scientists" who believe in AGW?

I think a more likely culprit is the lazy BBC reporter that pulled this statement out of his or her posterior rather than look up the answer.
