Why do you think it is possible? I know it’s Texas but do you really think the Dims will let you go?
If it is possible and it happens what do you have to enforce your right to say free?
If you stay free how do you keep from becoming some small Euro style state?
War is problematic.
Looking at Dallas, Austin, Harris County and the Valley, I don’t think Texas would be all that conservative.
Complicated issues of property ownership and trade.
Texas lost all right to secede after the Civil War. It was cleverly removed by the Yankees when Texas reentered the Union. I spent a great deal of $$ researching this years ago with one of the best Constitutional law firms in Texas. They concluded no legal way out and even if Texas could there is no mechanism to make it happen. Oh and the five state thing was also nullified after the CW.
While I agree that dealing with Mexico is going to be the greatest challenge. I don’t agree with the unemployment. Texas will lure profitable businesses from the U.S. by offering lower taxes and less regulation. Within a short period of time, Texas will have a booming economy as a result of businesses fleeing the U.S.
I am not sure legality will have anything to do with it. If there is a will to secede the only way to prevent it is through force and I don’t think the President of the U.S. would have the will or military to launch an attack on Texas.
Do you all have any nuke bases in Texas? Seize one and threaten to use them if your are not granted your independence. That’s the only way I can see Texas will every be independent again.
If Texas does so, then Zero will have been truely successful in destroying this great nation.
I agree that it is a last resort, but then again, the point of my column is that it is the only way to stop what is happening. I am starting with the assumption that Texas is going to secede, then I want to expound on the consequences.

Analyze the financial implications since social security and medicare payments would stop. What is Texas GDP output and can we sustain our Republic without outside funds.
Can we induce Oklahoma, New Mexico and Louisiana and Arkansas to join us?
We have excellent business schools and law schools, (SMU being one) as well as our State Universities and we can develope a plan to proceed!

Wonder what the poll results will be when Texas and other states are forced to help pay the debts of profligate states like California, New York and others?
I read that Texas gives more money to the Federal Government than it receives annually. Also, the citizens of the United States will not stand for a hard line approach to Texas. We barely could get them to support attacking Saddam Hussein and they are going to support strangling Texas.
Agreed. Maybe the best way for Texas would be to float a bond issue and buy several surrounding states (Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and a few others), and then lay claim to all formerly US Govt.-owned assets within the new boundary line of the Republic of Texas. /s (In case you are sarcasm-impaired).

I wish that it was just a case of idiots, but fear its much more sinister than that.
As good as it sounds in principle secession is a last gasp, desperate move. Texas may end up having the other 49 declare war on them.
I don’t agree. I think it would be the spark to take back our country. Writing doesn’t work, marching doesn’t work, and it appears voting won’t rein in the traitors in Washington. Every day, more of our Constitution is shredded, the party of the little guy is mostly silent, the media presents a distorted view of the evil created by Zero and his minions.
