New Bill Gives Obama Kill Switch To Shut Down The Internet

"The federal government would have “absolute power” to shut down the Internet under the terms of a new US Senate bill being pushed by Joe Lieberman, legislation which would hand President Obama a figurative “kill switch” to seize control of the world wide web in response to a Homeland Security directive.

Lieberman has been pushing for government regulation of the Internet for years under the guise of cybersecurity, but this new bill goes even further in handing emergency powers over to the feds which could be used to silence free speech under the pretext of a national emergency.

“The legislation says that companies such as broadband providers, search engines or software firms that the US Government selects “shall immediately comply with any emergency measure or action developed” by the Department of Homeland Security. Anyone failing to comply would be fined,” reports ZDNet’s Declan McCullagh.

I am curious how this would work on internet outside of the USA. Just what does the “kill switch do”?
I have not had an American ISP since 2005.

If anybody was serious of getting rid of 0 they would’ve pursued the BC case more vigorously but there is not even one Congressman who has the spine to do so. Too many are already implicated in the deception of getting this man in the WH.

call your congressmen now

My Congressman is a flaming socialist who is fourth in line in the House. He is Nancy Pelosi's yes man. When she says jump, he says "how High".

It’s hard to believe this could be done in a non-klutzy way, where Bummer succeeds in killing all online shopping at Sears at the same time as shutting down FR.

One could get dial-up access to foreign ISPs (e.g. Canada).

Canada? No. You are totally misinformed. Free Dominion moved its internet service provider to the Republic of Panama. Here in Panama internet service providers will go jail for revieling names and ownderships. It works on the same level as Panama’s banking secrets.

Oh lord!!!!

Let me rewrite that sentence over again....too many mistakes...

I am very sorry.

“Here in Panama internet service providers will go to jail for revealing names and ownerships.”

Forgive me.

FD seems to be very happy with their choice.

Is there any sign of a legal or constitutional challenge taking shape in response to this?

“Is there any sign of a legal or constitutional challenge taking shape in response to this?”

I am sorry, but I have not heard or read anything about it yet.

I recommend folks start switching to servers out of the U.S.

Panama is the best bet because of their secrecy laws to protect owners and users. It is the same law that covers their strict banking laws.

FreeDominion did it several years back. Their server is in Panama.

Sounds like "O" and his minions are taking a cue from the U.S. Post Office's union folk... shut down the Internet and wa-la that magic box in front of nearly everyone's home becomes a life-line.
