I'm trying MS security essentials and it seems to work ok...caught a trojan downloader that AVG didn't...and I've used Crap Cleaner for quite a while now...and Registry Repair 2008 for registry issues...
One more FREE VERSION FIREWALL to look at is Spyware Terminator.
The "Advanced Mode" offers alot of control, but it takes a while to learn how to use.
I can't stress the value of these two programs, enough.
Give them a look, at least.
If I’m understanding you properly, your actual email address autoforwards to a Gmail account, and then goes to you.
Before grabbing a bunch of anti virus software, I’d try to isolate the problem. If the email service provider got hijacked, a local scan of your computer won’t turn anything up.
From what you describe, it sounds to me like your original email server got hacked. Try sending an email from your Gmail account to your Gmail account, and include some links in it. If the hotlink doesn’t show up, you now know that it’s an email server problem and not on your computer. You might also try creating a throw down Yahoo or hotmail account and send that to Gmail and also to each other. If everything shows up with the link, it’s the computer. If stuff flowing through one specific email account shows up with the link, it’s the account.

I have used this forum with good results. Down side is that it takes several days because they are all volunteers. But, good folks there.
The path is: ISP=T/W Cable ...primary mail server= Flare Web Hosting...from there autoforwarded to Gmail for spam control and then autoforwarded again to my desktop / Thunderbird email client. Since I get a number of these linked emails from a particular source (but not limited to this source) I changed the destination to a Yahoo account and the same email doesn't have the suspicious links when viewed there. So like you say I think it is not a local problem but something at either the Flare email server or Gmail. Funny thing is that I have a friend who routes his mail the same way exactly and has had none of these emails. Which leads me to think that eithermy Gmail account has been hacked or my Flare account has been...
