Paul McCartney travels with a portable Buddha statue to maintain his zen while on tour

McCartney also told of his joy at receiving a Gershwin Prize For Popular Song from the US President Barack Obama.

The star was presented with the award at the White House earlier this month, and he admitted he was ‘very honoured.’

‘I’ve never met an incumbent president so it was really good. I was very honoured to tell you the truth because I’m a fan of his.

‘You know, I think he’s a great president and to be there getting this great prize and it being presented by him, it was so many things for me.'

McCartney and Stevie Wonder performed their No1 hit Ebony and Ivory from 1982 for the President at the ceremony, which was particularly meaningful for the star.

McCartney said: 'Stevie Wonder and I sang Ebony and Ivory and, you know, that was like the first time we’d done it live.

'So it brought back memories of when I wrote it, and when we recorded it [1982] - when there was no chance of having a black president.

'It was just the remotest thing ever so, to be there, singing it with Stevie, and two yards away from the black president, his wife and kids, it was very emotional actually. So, yeah, I was humbled and grateful.’

Sir Paul McCartney has decided he needs to have a zen-like calm when he is travelling.

The Beatles legend has admitted he has a Buddha statue in the temporary dressing room that the veteran takes with him from venue to venue.

At last weekend’s Isle Of Wight festival, his 170-strong production team virtually took over the backstage area. He then made sure, as is his habit, that all food served was vegetarian.

Now he has revealed how, in his private backstage area, he keeps scented candles...and a Buddha.

‘You know, I think he’s a great president...'

How so, Paul?

I'm afraid Paul's a drone. At least he doesn't get to vote.

I am one of the few who never liked the Beatles, so Paul McCartney is nothing to me regardless...lol. He can carry a plush Barney the Dinosaur around with him for all I care, and he might be better off.

Black President this, black President that, swoon, swoon gush, gush.

Who gives a flying crap what color his skin is? It’s about what he does with all that power. So far, not a lot that’s good. And while I’m at it- the President isn’t some kind of demigod. He’s a public servant- he works for us.

Nauseating.
