DURBAN, South Africa — Three-time champions Germany fired out a warning to World Cup challengers with a comprehensive 4-0 dismantling of Australia in their opening Group D match here Sunday.

The Germans totally dominated the Socceroos, with captain Philipp Lahm and rising stars Mesut Oezil and Thomas Mueller running Australian veterans Scott Chipperfield and Craig Moore ragged down the right wing.

Goals from Lukas Podolski, Miroslav Klose, Mueller and Brazil-born striker Cacau were just rewards for a team which also had a hatful of other scoring opportunities.

The victory leaves Germany atop of Group D, Ghana having beaten Serbia 1-0 in the day's other game.

Was the Australia side supposed to be any good?

Should have had another 3 or 4 goals. Very impressive performance.

Australia had an early flurry, but that was about it.

And now without Cahill due to suspension, they’re toast.

Cacau set a WC record for coming into the game and scoring in 50-somthing seconds.

Australia made some noise back in 2006, almost beating Italy, but as the announcers pointed out, they were the oldest team in the tournament, and it showed.

Was a beautiful moment. Germany is going to the finals for sure. Personally I felt they got robbed back in ‘06 but this time they have the perfect blend of experience and young blood.

Australia pretty much has the easiest qualifying path to the World Cup.

It used to be the Oceania winner had to play the 5th place South American winner to qualify.

Now all Australia has to do is beat out such soccer powerhouses as, Qatar and Bahrain, Iraq and China.

Back in the 50s they did and tied and then just a month or two ago, North Korea beat South Korea 1 - nil.....Oh wait you mean in soccer! I was referring to a war and a torpedoing.

Not a big fan of soccer but did watch the Bundesliga occasionally when I lived in Europe. Do the Germans still play with a somewhat boring but precise and machine like style? If so it will be fun (again) to see them go against Brazil. I imagine Germany versus Australia would be like an NFL squad playing against a college team.

Yes and it was on display today. Lot’s of short quick passes. 1-2’s in front of goal, pull backs from the line, etc. etc. They didn’t give anything new away except to show that they all knew each other and Australia couldn’t pressure in the midfield.

So far they are the only team to really click. Unlike England’s defense. Ha.

I don’t think any of the top eight teams are going to give much away until the knock out stage.

Another goal or two and Canada would have insisted they really lost!

This is the first world cup they are both in.

They played each other in the qualifying rounds and the match was going to be in Pyongyang but the North Koreans said no South Korean flag or anthem. After some talks FIFA had them play in Shanghai and it ended 0 - 0.
