LOS ANGELES | Abby Sunderland’s quest to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world was star-crossed from the start, and weather was always the principal villain.
Originally scheduled to launch in early December to avoid the chilly winter weather and deadly waves in the Indian Ocean, the California teenager and her team met with delays equipping her boat, Wild Eyes, money shortages and unfriendly hometown weather.
When she finally set sail Jan. 23, experienced sailors issued warnings given the late start, ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Other than being jealous of these parents' wealth and their child's courage and moxey, how can you even begin to compare this to the Ballon Boy hoax. This was not a hoax. Their son had previously solo-circumnavigated the world...their daughter had completed five months of a 7-8 month trip. You people are such envious haters.
Sweet that Abby survived, but bitter that they had to abandon all the video footage on the computer hard drive. If they can't recover that they might have to go to CGI for the documentary.
And another point is cash-in on what exactly? Nobody was concerned about this lady’s life until hardship occurred. You need to not be concerned is my point. It’s none of your damn business. She goes, she failed. You make no sense.

And you know how nobody is dogging her brother who successfully solo-circumnavigated the world prior to Abby's attempt....I guess a lot of men can't stand to see a woman who has bigger "cajones" than them.....better to sit back and be a keyboard commander and tell these folks that they don't know what they're doing, etc. LMAO at the wimps and misogynists
That isn’t it. The fact that she showed the ability and drive bothers them to no end. They have never been there and without a serious effort, never will be. They have no idea what some of us have endured and survived. I sure as hell didn’t need a bunch of nanny-staters coming down on me.

Me? I don't have any personal stake in this, except that all of Western Civilization needs more people with true grit, and lots less ankle-biters.
I’m from the South originally, and am back there now. In between I spent some time in the Pacific Northwest. Great people....most of whom would be supporting Abby here. It really is pathetic the hatred being shown to Abby and her family over this courageous undertaking....to describe her brother’s solo-circumnavigation at age 16-17 as “a piece of cake” is so laughable....I can only assume that the person who posted this considers going to the mailbox an adventure. And the OP considers going around Cape Horn solo at age 16 no big deal....he probably considers getting on Splash Mountain at Disney the ultimate adventure....LMAO
LOL! God forbid they shoot a moose for meat when their 8. (and skin it). We didn’t get fresh meat or veggies in the day. A train ride twice a year helped out.
Ditto...well said...I hope this girl ultimately pops out about seven kids with her beauty, drive, courage and determination....the gene pool could use a little bit more of her DNA.

As to the dangers of the sea...He told me about storms where he witnessed 40 foot swells and the boat in a trough with a wall of water descending on them. Funny thing, they lived through it and the people who live this life are use to it.
When the law caught up with him while in port (6 months from turning 18), they sent him back home and to school. The school teachers and administrators didn't know how to deal with a 17 y.o. who swore like a sailor and viewed himself as a man not a child.
My husband said it’s a “law of the sea”. Seaman are obligated to save others in trouble at sea.
Pretty soon they’ll be designing those cubicles with virtual reality scenes so you can feel like you’re working on the beach in Maui!
But virtual reality scenes of extreme environments won’t be allowed. That could lead to dreams of doing risky things or possibly a heart attack right there in your cubicle. That costs the collective money. Money money money.
That is NOT to be TOLERATED!!! (Such evil employees, seeking fame and fortune).
