LOS ANGELES | Abby Sunderland’s quest to become the youngest person to sail solo around the world was star-crossed from the start, and weather was always the principal villain.
Originally scheduled to launch in early December to avoid the chilly winter weather and deadly waves in the Indian Ocean, the California teenager and her team met with delays equipping her boat, Wild Eyes, money shortages and unfriendly hometown weather.
When she finally set sail Jan. 23, experienced sailors issued warnings given the late start, ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I was thinking of giving the ignorant you go grrl cheersquad another chance to celebrate a voyage of disaster.
Boy you got that right.
Regardless of the boat or the weather, my first though was that she had been captured and abducted. The open ocean can be a dangerous place in a number of ways for a sixteen year old beautiful little girl.
Why didn’t they just have her hitchhike through Mexico instead. She was very very lucky in many ways. IMO
Thank you for your thoughtful comment. Those on FR might want to take note that the attacks on this family are coming from the left. One of their first digs is to note that the children are home schooled.
LOL!
I had (and still have to some extent) some sympathy for the brave little toaster clearly in over her head trying to sail a boat and voyage beyond her demonstrated abilities.
By "Team Abby" the Reality Show Family scam earned contempt with http://www.savewildeyes.com/ linked to from http://www.abbysunderland.com/
America needs better heroes than this.
It was not a reality show family until the media made it one. People are not being right at all here. If she wants to sail the world and has proved to her mentors she can do it, let her try. All of the naysayers pretend her rescue comes out of their pocket. I advise they focus on that 13 trillion their kids are indebted for life.
Tell it like it is....I applaud this corageous girl for taking on an incredible challenge. I hope she gets the boat fixed and tries to finish what she started. I am disappointed at the people on FR who are obviously jealous that a) this family has the money to pull something like this off and b) this girl is doing something few people in the world would have the courage and fortitude to even try....meanwhile their kids are smoking dope, playing video games, etc. The repeated calls for the Aussies to go after the parents for restitution when the Aussies have said “we got it, no problem, that’s what we would expect of you in a similar situation” tells you what you need to know....jealousy and envy are terrible things.
And the Sunderlands are Christian .
yep!! I’m sure those somali muslim savage pirates woulda just tucked her in at night with a stuffed animal all by herself unmolested. yep, that is how they woulda handled that pretty little all alone white western girl. then her head gets sawed off on video.......but not until our navy at no small cost was sent to the area to try to rescue her. stupid attention whore youtube generation is all this was 240b. I’m all for young’ns getting after it adventure wise but not when there is the very good chance our navy at huge costs might need to be tied up in a non military rescue opp.
Before the voyage, Laurence ( the father ) told the Los Angeles Times that he believed the Lord is in control of everything on Abbys journey.
“We are born-again Christians, and we don’t make any decision just based on feeling or even on sound knowledge, he told the Times in a video interview. We also pray about it. The conviction of prayer and the answer to prayer has led to where we are with Abigail’s campaign.
Abbys mother, Marianne, told momlogic.com that the Sunderland family became Christians when their oldest son, Zac, was 4. In 2008, the 17-year-old Zac became the youngest person to complete a solo voyage around the world. This past week, he graduated from the Trinity Pacific Christian School program, a homeschool organization in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
God was with me every nautical mile, he said of his own historic voyage during his graduation at Calvary Community Church, according to the Star.
Not much different that the gossipy homeowners associations types right here.
Midtown Atlanta "can be a dangerous place in a number of ways for a sixteen year old beautiful little girl".....should we just all stay home and play video games to be "safe"....and she ain't a "little girl"....she's been on this journey since January and sailed across the Pacific ocean....hardly and inexperienced novice that her parents just shoved out into the sea.
Beg to differ Adventures in Sunderland (Reality TV Show) That's been pitching since 2009. Yeah it's a low rent PR company but The Sunderlands seem to think it'll make them the next Kardassians.
If she wants to sail the world and has proved to her mentors she can do it, let her try.
She has no mentors, apart from her stage father.
The current game on sailing forums is "find any ex-family sailing training Abby has done".
So far it seems to be that Abby has never taken a formal sailing class.
Jessica Watson has taken classes at a sailing school for the 8 years - The last 4 as the Instructor.
Exactly...I never thought I would see Freepers descend into nanny-state liberals who think they know what is best for other peoples' children and side with Geraldo. Pretty soon they'll be calling for the parents to be arrested for home schooling their children....LOL at the jealousy.
in other history weather blamed for hitler losing in russia
How many of those Somali muslim savage pirates do you think could make it to 35 degrees south?
Map of piracy and pirate attacks in 2009
Yea, and she sets sail on the Pacific.
I’d say her sucessful rescue was a stroke of luck this time. I keep hearing about how difficult it was. Next time she mostly likely won’t be so lucky. The media keeps talking about 20 to 30 foot waves. On her blog she said she encountered 60 foot waves. She is one lucky girl to be alive. She doesn’t need to tempt fate again.
It’s a man-child nation now. Wear gray and don’t stick your head above the cubicle wall.
