TALLAHASSEE As he positions himself to the center in the U.S. Senate race, Gov. Charlie Crist on Friday vetoed a measure requiring most women to pay for an ultrasound and hear a description of the fetus before they can have an abortion.
"This bill places an inappropriate burden on woman seeking to terminate a pregnancy," Crist said in his veto message.
Anti-abortion advocates and Crist's Republican critics in the Legislature immediately pounced on the decision. John Stemberger, head of the Florida Family Policy Council, called the veto "profoundly disappointing" and said it's now "crystal clear that he's pro-abortion."
Crist's move marks the third veto of a high-priority bill passed by the GOP-controlled Legislature. While lawmakers were still in session and he was still a Republican, Crist vetoed a campaign finance bill that he said would reinstate legislative "slush funds." He also vetoed a controversial teacher tenure bill that earned him wide acclaim among educators.
"Individuals hold strong personal views on the issue of life, as do I," Crist wrote. "However, personal views should not result in laws that unwisely expand the role of government and coerce people to obtain medical tests or procedures that are not medically necessary."

Not all in one post on one thread. On this thread, I am complaining about this attempt at government meddling. I complain about all sorts of government meddling. Just not all in the same post.
“Not all in one post on one thread. On this thread, I am complaining about this attempt at government meddling. I complain about all sorts of government meddling. Just not all in the same post. “
Thats just the point, it isn’t meddling. Not any more than Roe vs Wade. Abortion kills a human being. So sorry you are offended by attempts to make it more difficult to murder thousands of innocent babies.
Funny statement. So it's no less of an intrusion that Roe. Not exactly a ringing endorsement. It is meddling. It's the gubmint requiring certain services and procedures. It's no different than any other intrusion into our private medical business. Except that of course, to all big-gubmint advocates, the end justifies the means.
The govt is in every single part of our lives. I find it curious the only part you apparently object to is the saving of innocent babies.
Where did you ever get that idea? I object to all manner of government intrusion, unlike you, who apparantly welcome it when it suits you.
“Where did you ever get that idea? I object to all manner of government intrusion, unlike you, who apparantly welcome it when it suits you. “
All manner eh, so you are ok with murder, child molestation, fraud and so forth. At least you’re consistent.
Now you’re just being absurd.
No, you are the one that said all govt interference is bad.
I never said that. Interference and intrusion are different words with different meanings. Enough with the silly games. Life is short.
Crist is the product of silly Republican primary voters from FL, too uninformed to make a decision and voting as the media urges them.
because of Republican primary voters being so uninformed, but Sanford was more credible before his deceit became known.
Where are those who supported Crist in the primary on this forum? They were many and they were loud.
Now, they are scarce as hen’s teeth.
Crist has not changed. He is the same now as he was then.
Why aren’t they telling us what a great Senator he would be?
I voted for Gallagher but more REpublicans and probably more than a few Democrats said they wanted Crist. And they got him.
“Crist is the product of silly Republican primary voters from FL, too uninformed to make a decision and voting as the media urges them.”
Crist is the product of the system that he and the power brokers controlled. During the primary there were few choices.
A MSM heavily influenced voters nationwide. To imply it only happened to ‘silly’ Florida voters is dishonest.
“Interference and intrusion are different words with different meanings.”
Just come out and say you are pro-abortion.
“. Life is short.”
Especially for the babies this law would have saved.
I’m pro-life. That doesn’t mean I intend to use the power of government to proselytize my views. Free people can do that independently of the government.
“Im pro-life. That doesnt mean I intend to use the power of government to proselytize my views.”
Its only through the power of govt that we have legal abortion.
You sound remarkable like Crist when he says he has deep convictions but won’t let that impact his decisions.
How about a law that every one selling tobacco has to take x-rays of the purchaser’s lungs and make them see the damage being caused? Same concept. If you want to play tit for tat and use big government against big government, that’s your business. From where I sit, that leads to one end: more big government.
It is through the power of the national government that we have legal abortion nationwide. Were it left to the states (as it properly should be), I suspect there are a handful of states where it would remain legal.
You sound remarkable like Crist when he says he has deep convictions but wont let that impact his decisions.
Crist's language (undue burden) sounds like it came from his lawyers, because it comes from SCOTUS jurisprudence. For me, undue burden and the SCOTUS wouldn't have anything to do with it. I'd reject it on its face and an attempt to use the government to discourage what is, no matter how odious, a legal procedure.
Private citizens can do this type of work, and do. Ultrasound pictures are used by private, right-to-life groups all the time. Better than using the government.
You`re making excellent points that target the split between Republicans and conservatives, and political conservatives and religious conservatives. These are precisely the subjects we should be discussing, but can`t because daring to bring them up doesn`t result in discussion of the real and important foundations of our party, but name_calling. Are we against big government, or are we for big government, but we want to be the ones `stepping on` someone`s `throat`? Do we want government to step in and preserve the right to life? I do, but does that mean [to cop from your example] government should make it illegal for pregnant women to smoke? Should a pregnant woman be arrested if she`s drinking in public and potentially damaging her baby? What about in private? Thank you for daring to bring up conservative questions on a conservative site.
