Magnus Hirschfeld opened something similar near the Reichstag in Berlin in 1919. It didn’t go over well. Germany was on her knees attempting to recover from the war and then hyperinflation. People were trying to restore family and church and create a stable social order. The reaction to Hirshfeld and the Cabaret scene was not good. Those photos we see of book burnings by Nazis were mainly of Hirschfeld’s collections (the media plays this down and mentions the other books, books by scientists and internationally known literary figures).
