The socialistic French, who are responsible for the secularization of Europe, are just the right group to propose this kind of nonsense. Ignoring, in their deliberate deconstructionist way, the intent of comic book good v. evil, they plod on psychoanalyzing behavior as if anyone really cares. Yet there is always the American acolyte who sees his opportunity to get his 15 minutes on the tail of his French counterpart as does this fellow Bender in the article. Sure he doesn’t buy the French mental schtick about Darth Vader but he does think that the film character may have a personality disorder. Good grief, this is a fictional movie character not one from Shakespeare. The only reason that this film gets such credibility is that, in my opinion, the mythologist, Joseph Campbell made such a big deal about it in one of his books. Of course, using movie characters immediately makes your analysis outdated because the shelf life of their impact is less than a year. Anyhow, the French, according to a book I just read with the eponymous title, are “Our Oldest Enemy”. Best to remember that in every circumstance.
You’re referring to The Hero’s Journey by Joe Campbell. It said that Star Wars was the best script ever written in Hollywood. It was then used by every studio in the industry to make every action film just like Star Wars, since they couldn’t think for themselves. Never mind the plot holes and some of the worst dialogue ever written, that book is the movie bible and we are worse off for it.
Considering that Vader was a mass muder, but gets”redeemed” for killing jhis boss, who was killing his son. Lucas was and is a moral twit.
