Girl mauled by pit bull in Lawrenceville
Wednesday, June 09, 2010
By Moriah Balingit, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
A 5-year-old girl underwent surgery at UPMC Children's late Tuesday night after being mauled by a pit bull at a home in Lawrenceville.
The girl, Kallie Schaffer of Etna, required facial surgery and 600 micro-stitches to reconstruct her lip, said her grandfather, Steve Schaffer.
Mr. Schaffer said he took his daughter Rachael and two granddaughters, Kallie and 3-year-old Eva, to his friend's house on the 100 block of 45th Street to see the dog's new puppies. The dog, a 30- or 40-pound pit bull named Bailey, belongs to the roommate of Mr. Schaffer's friend.
Mr. Schaffer had let Bailey into the yard while his two granddaughters went to play with the puppies in the basement. Ms. Schaffer and her two daughters were standing in the home's foyer getting ready to leave when Mr. Schaffer let the dog in from the backyard. Mr. Schaffer said the dog walked through the living and dining room and then lunged at the 5-year-old, pushing her back into a wall and biting her face.

Why don’t you send them cards, or is that too much trouble for you, but think others should do it..Its sad for the child and more people are getting an education on the breed and might change their minds about bring one into their home...
Since you’re a newbie here, perhaps you should enter the keyword “dogbite” and realize that this isn’t unusual to post such a topic here on FreeRepublic...especially when it comes to this particular breed.
If more people read stories such as this, parents/grandparents would take more precautions with any breed of dog.
Nearly all serious dog attacks involve an unneutered male dog or an unspayed female who currently has puppies she’s protecting. While it’s true that pit bulls have exceptionally powerful jaws, resulting in much more serious harm from an attack of the same intensity, I think the overrepresentation of pit bulls in the dog attack headlines is largely because the sort of people among whom pit bulls are fashionable are also the sort who don’t bother getting their dogs fixed (or properly trained).
Perhaps, since you are such old timer (not) you should do some of your own homework and see what a joke chet has become with his pitt bull obsession. Yes, some articles can be informative, but this guy’s only hobby is pitt bulls because he has unresolved issues of being bitten by a Yorkie when he was a child.
Sterilize. Bump.
What would you think my agenda might be if every day I posted a story where a GUN injured someone accidentally or was used to assault someone.
Prohibitionist minds are very small weak minds...and easily mallable.
My premise is that education and knowledge are key in a free country or in one that would like to be or stay free.
I love dogs, especially English springers, but they are not for everyone. I am not in favor of banning or pushing any breed, but I am in favor of education. People should know that dogs are dogs and each breed comes with built in traits and tendencies, many wonderful, but some potentially deadly.
Regarding your example, educating current and prospective GUN owners and those who will never have a GUN on the potential dangers of a GUN is the responsible thing to do. Unlike dogs, guns don't have a mind of their own.
Training helps, but can’t overcome everything. Natures dictates that a mama dog is *supposed* to aggressively protect her puppies if she perceives a threat. And an unfamiliar dog-sized person approaching is something her instincts are quite likely to perceive as a threat.
With male dogs, *nothing* beats neutering to curb natural aggression.
Thanks...very well said!
“...this guys only hobby is pitt bulls because he has unresolved issues of being bitten by a Yorkie when he was a child.”
Is that supposed to be funny?
How about a desire on his part to demonize?
That agenda on his part is not clear to you?
One of the best things about FR is our ability to respond with our own facts and opinions to support or counter what has been posted.
Others ignore the article altogether and simply attempt to shoot the messenger to shut them down. This is a very weak approach and most often used when one has nothing to counter the facts presented.
In the arena of PR, pits and their owners are most often their own worst enemies.
What the story conveniently leaves out is that the 5 year old was biting the heads off the lives pups and the mother was simply defending her brood as no Pit Bull would EVER attack anyone unprovoked.

One thing I've learned is they almost always attack children, and occasionally an elderly woman.
