There are reports Stephanie was carrying around $1000 given to her by her dad to buy a new computer, plus another grand or so in poker winnings that night. However, no money was found with her body.
So, you may be right that he committed a robbery. But it still doesn't make sense for him to carry it off so sloppily as to guarantee his capture. I still think the robbery was an after-thought, that he found and stole the money after killing her in a fit of rage. Hopefully, that's what went down, because then, under Peruvian law, he gets life, instead of possibly getting out before he's 30 (assuming he doesn't get snuffed in prison).
There is other evidence in the case that involves observations about his financial condition and emails to friends pleading for loans that indicate the acquisition of funds was the primary subject on his mind. He’d also just finished extorting $25k from the Holloways which he apparently lost at gambling and to pay for his travel and accommodations.
Stephany was a self-identified lesbian and Joran allegedly knew that. It hasn’t been confirmed by Peruvian law enforcement, but there’s a suspicion that she went with Joran to look at his laptop because she was interested in buying it from him and/or because he was going to repay her some money she loaned him for gambling. Either of these would be a ruse on his part to lure her to his room to rob her. Peruvian LE have reported that forensics indicate she was killed between 6:30 am and 7:30 am, which would be 1-2 hours after they left the casino, NOT after he went for coffee.
If he flew into a rage, it seems more likely it was because she wouldn’t get money out of her bank for him or get money from her dad or give him her debit card and PIN, something along those lines. LE also reports that he tried to get her body out of the room but was unable to get her into his duffle bag, even though she’s pretty small.
At any rate, LE doesn’t believe sexual assault was the reason for the murder, at least that’s their position at this time. I don’t think they have all the forensic test results in, however. But the autopsy indicates no sexual assault, no attempted sexual assault. OTOH, it’s a strong Latino country and sexual assaults are an insult to the family. Perhaps the LE is keeping that info under wraps out of respect for the victim’s father and four brothers. I don’t rule it out 100%, either, but I really think robbery was the driving force.
Another fact that points to pre-meditation (albeit disorganized pre-meditation) is the date: May 30th. It was, to the day, the fifth anniversary of the death of Natalee. Pretty damn freaky coincidence if it was just a sudden, unexpected rage killing. Maybe killing Stephany on May 30th and leaving her body was a subconscious way of admitting he killed Natalee since he can’t produce her body long since disposed of in the ocean.
Anyway, it’s just like a Greek or Shakespearean tragedy in terms of the Van Der Sloots. The overall story in terms of the victims is sort of biblical, with Joran, the antagonist, headed to Dante’s Inferno. It is the most bizarre thing I’ve ever seen. With so many parallels to great literary works, it’s mind-boggling.
