You likely have kids that are actually at school when you think they are at school. This is a valuable service for some parents.

No...when I was a student in the same school system, the office called the parents by 10am to let them know their child was absent from school.

I don't understand why they changed to policy to wait until 6pm rather than almost immediately.

I suppose if a school doesn't make the call at all, a 6pm call is better than nothing.
