actually I read back in January that the present technology was going to be dispensed with soon. I just didn’t think it would be six months. I really should have known better given what I read. I was going to wait, but had waited too long already wanting to get the video on the iPhone and was tired of my old slow iPhone. Oh well.

Not true, you can buy it within 6 month of when you previous 2 year Iphone contract will expire.

If he bought it in January, the soonest he can upgrade with the upgrade price is July of 2011.

I bought mine June of 2009, so I have to wait til Dec of 2010 before I can upgrade.

Why would they not set up their own wireless and dedicated line for the demo? I guess Google had similar problems recently...how can you let that happen...

they did... but there are only so many channels of WIFI available... and there were 570 being used in that one room. I would say that was overload. Someone was on the same channels they were using.

Even if you set up your own access point, you're still fighting with 500+ other wireless devices in the room for the actual radio waves they all share.

OTOH, maybe they could have asked Moscone Center to use only lower channels for all their wireless access points for visitors, such as 1-8, so Apple could set theirs at 11, now all alone in its frequency range. But they probably didn't know this was going to happen. Oh well, live and learn.

It used to be, and I believe still is, the case that if you spend $99 or more a month, you’re eligible for the upgrade sooner. The AT&T announcement, at least as I read it, is that you’re eligible for the subsidy 6 months earlier than you would be otherwise. The contract, however, is still 24 months, as you’ll find out if you try to cancel service.

Just to engage in wild and irresponsible speculation, I’m guessing AT&T knows that it’s exclusivity deal is up in the next year at longest. They’re bumping up the eligibility date to lock in as many folks as possible for two years before other carriers jump into the iPhone game.

Dial *639# [Call] and AT&T will send you a text message with your upgrade date. You might be pleasantly surprised.

"• AT&T in U.S.: If your contract expires anytime in 2010, you can get iPhone 4 for the same prices if you up your contract for two more years.
" So, if I currently have a 3g iPhone with an unlimited data plan, I can upgrade my phone by renewing for 2 years and still keep my unlimited data plan? If so, SWEET!

Yeah, who the hell is responsible for all these people carrying around tiny little WiFi devices? Oh. Oops.

It was both according to a friend who is there tweeting it. They couldn’t get an ATT 3g signal either.

This is the downside of the rapid development in cell phones. It becomes obsolete literally 6 months after buying. Based on my experience and other notes here, you will be stuck with your contract through Summer 2011. The good news is that Apple will be putting out ANOTHER new model at that time, you you’ll probably just skip this one but buy next years new model. It will be even bigger and better than this one announced today.

I just got a Droid knowing that they will have Droid 2 soon, Droid Incredible now for full price, or any number of other huge advancements from Android, Apple and everyone else before my contract is up for renewal. Nature of the beast these days. The good news is that you have probably the 2nd best phone ever made already.

I hope/trust the AT&T monopoly will end later on this year with another announcement opportunity...
Too many, including me, can’t use AT&T because of their crappy coverage.

Scroll down to post 27.
There’s not a lot there that my Droid doesn’t already do.
And it’s about to do more in 2.2

I heard there is an app to do video messaging on androiod but I haven’t checked it out yet. (don’t really care but teeny-boppers like it)
Really don’t need a front camera, not that self indulgent.

Otherwise, new iPhone compares to the Incredible. I’m looking at rooting my Droid to overclock and get a few other things but I might wait until I’m closer to an upgrade.

AT&T is the reason I went to Verizon 4 months ago. I know people who love their iPhones but absolutely hate that network. Saw quite a few iPhones last weekend at a family function struggle for data or completely fail just 5 miles outside a city.
No problem with Verizon.

There’s not a lot there that my Droid doesn’t already do.

On the surface, maybe. For example, while your droid will drain your battery in no time through multitasking, the iPhone's multitasking won't kill the battery. Others, the Incredible doesn't record 720p, certainly can't do full editing on it, it's over one-quarter thicker, and it doesn't have the battery life. That's just for starters on the "checklist" mentality that PC industry people like.

And you'll want to overclock that droid. The A4 chip in the iPhone is a lot faster than a Snapdragon (what's in the Incredible) of the same speed.

No problem with Verizon.

I like Verizon, too. That is the only reason I have a Droid instead of an iPhone.

OTOH, Verizon isn't too quick with upgrades. You may be waiting a long time for Android 2.2, as with Android availability is completely dependent on your carrier. Everybody gets a new iOS when it's released.
