Twin nine-month-old girls were being treated at a London hospital on Monday after being mauled in their sleep by a fox.
The animal apparently entered the house and climbed stairs before attacking Lola and Isabella Koupparis in their beds while their parents watched television, according to reports. (snip) In urban areas of England there are an estimated 27 foxes per square mile, living in close proximity to humans.

Canines are species in the carnivore family, Canidae, including the wolves, coyote, foxes, dingo, jackals, and several species of wild dog. The family also includes the domestic dog, which is believed to have descended from the wolf. The Canidae includes 10-14 genera with 30-35 species, depending on the taxonomic treatment.

Its rare for English homes to have screen doors, and even rarer for them to have air conditioning. Very hot and/or humid weather is too uncommon to warrant it.
Well, then someone ought to tell them that besides foxes, open doors can invite other vermin and lots of bugs. How can it not be humid when it rains so much there? In all of those books and movies that take place in 19th century England, doctors are always telling their patients to go to a dry or temperate climate.

In US cities, there are probably twice that many coyotes per square mile. This one strolled into a sandwich shop in Chicago:

Development after development goes up in once wild areas. And they are populated by the same people who want to ban guns and who think hunting is barbaric.
This is a nuisance. Near where I live (unincorporated northern Illinois, near Wisconsin) a devepment went up in a nearby village. A fellow who's lived in the area all of his life goes hunting, bags a deer, and hangs it in his garage. A woman in the development complains to the village that the garage door is open, and little ones might be traumatized to see Bambi's dad being prepared for dinner and maybe a wall decoration. he caller couldn't believe there wasn't a law ... an ordinance ... a SOMEthing. There isn't ... yet.

So, I suppose the little ones watch cartoons - which are full of mixed anthropomorphic creatures - and does she then take them shopping in the supermarket meat department? Wonder how she explains the animal crackers they probably eat(?)

It's a good thing there are no dingoes about:

two jack russells will tear a fox to pieces - after they force it into a hole. Jack Russell is to fox as mongoose is to cobra. I know which breed I’d want patrolling my urban garden!

What a bizarre thing to happen. I guess eliminating hunting of carnivorous predators so they become over populated around populated areas isn't such a good idea. Who'd a thought?

There really aren't all that many vermin either. Urban foxes are a relatively new phenomenae. There are no wolves, no bears, no raccoons and very few snakes (only three species are native to Britain, all of them scarse. The grass snake is by far the most common and it isn't poisonous). Rats and rabbits are common but they tend to avoid Humans. Slugs and house flies are a nuisance, but screen doors and air conditioning don't stop them anyway.
Humidity is only really a problem with heat. In the cold humidity doesn't really register, unless perhaps you suffer from arthritis.

I was waiting for a taxi about 5 in the morning. And a fox came trotting down the middle of the street. I watched it from about a block away and it passed right by me. That was the LAST thing I expected to see at 5 am on a London street. But they surely are there.
Try walking down the sidewalk in Singapore and coming face to face with a coiled cobra in full bonnet. That will get your attention. Good thing I had only had a couple of drinks and decided to cross the street. Damn thing was right next to a bus stop.

Hilarious! I love foxes. I’ve seen a few red ones where I’m at. Its the damn fisher cats that scare everything away.
